• PtAINPEALKR HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7. 1904 Sports ; • - * ' i . » . . . Marian Central girl cagers stung by veteran Harvard squad ByDlckPtteraon P|iA^M&afL||«MU MAM* |mmU« nWM I'twl NTVlCf HARVARD -- Combine a fast fUrt with 26 turnovers, 20 personal fouls and a meager 24 |ier?ent shooting average, and you have the makings of a rout. Tliat's precisely what Har vard did to Marian Central Tuesday night in the girls basketball opener for both teams. After jumping out to a 15-0 lead and limiting Marian to four points in the second quarter, the Hornets stormed past the inexperienced Hurricanes 53-32. "We still have a lot of things we have to do," said Harvard coach Dave Swengel. "We didn't press tonight. Our defense wasn't as good as I'd like it to be. We've got a lot of games, so . . " So, there's plenty of time. WHILE THE Hurricanes were gutted by graduation, the Hornets return three starters - junior Michelle Crosby, and seniors Kim Armstrong and Karen Koch. "In those three Idds there's a lot of experience out there," Swengel said. They accounted for 53 percent of Harvard's points last season when the Hornets were 14-8 and W percent of the rebounds, Swengel said. All three broke double figures, with Crosby leading all scorers with 15. Armstrong and Koch both tossed in 10. Michelle Lalor led the 'Canes with 14, mostly from the deep perimeter. The Hornets also dominated the boards, unofficially out- rebounding the Hurricanes 39- 26. Koch led the Hornets with 10 boards and Dawson had eight. Michelle Lalor had nine rebounds for the 'Canes. HARVARD scored off the opening tip when Armstrong layed up the first basket. Then the points just kept coming. The Hurricanes got into foul trouble early, letting the Hor nets get in the bonus three minutes into the game. However, Harvard had an off night at the line, connecting on only 9-of-24 attempts. With 2:15 left in the quarter - while Harvard began playing the bench - Lalor finally broke the ice with a rebound shot. She followed with two more baskets, both from about 20 feet out. Laura Lalor canned one from the free-throw area to cut the Hornet lead to 18-8. Koch, who was roaming the baseline Tuesday night, tossed in a 15-footer from the base for a 20-8 quarter-ending lead. The Hurricanes didn't score until halfway through the second quarter when Donna Remke sank a pair of free throws, which cut the Harvard lead to 25-10. Michelle Lalor scored the only field goal of the period 45 seconds later, but Crosby hit a free throw and a drove fora baasket for a 29-12 lead going into the second half. Dawson and Michelle Lalor traded baskets in the first minute of the third quarter, then Harvard had a run of five points on a Koch free throw and baseline basket and a jumper from the lane by Armstrong for a 3trl4 lead. Donna Kelly fired in a long one, but Koch and Armstrong retaliated with baskets to up the lead to 40-16. Michelle Lalor and Kathleen Healy traded baskets for a 42-18 mark at the end of the period. Julie Callahan scored off the fourth-quarter tip. The lead was increased to 48-20 when Crosby scored and Laura Healy put away two fastbreaks.
