Vernon Kleen, avian ecologist, who compiles the Christmas Bird Count data for publication, said the Department of Con­ servation is interested in cooperating with the project because "it helps us determine the status of Illinois bird populations during winter." Participating birders nkeep a count of all the birds they see l within a 15-mile radius. Walking or driving in a designated area, from dawn to dusk, they gather information, observe habitat and record information about the process of ^habitat degradation. A $2 fee, which is used to finance publication of the Christmas Bird Count data, is collected from each participant. The resulting document is provided free to Audubon members and, at a small fee, to non-members. In 1983, more than 800,000 birds were counted by 1,019 observers during the Christmas Bird Count, Kleen said. The Christmas Bird Count tradition began in 1900 when c Frank M. Chapman, editor of "Bird Lore" (the predecessor to "Audubon Magazine") suggested it as an alternative to the annual Christmas Day hunt, which often resulted in the ̂ slaughter of many songbirds and other nongame species.
