FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 7,1944) More than 400 ..new farm customers were added to the rural electric liqes of the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois dur­ ing the first nine months of 1944, pushing the total number of farm and rural units served with elec­ tricity past the 24,800 mark for the first time in the company's 33- year history of bringing electric power to farmers. The McHenry Choral Club an­ nounced that proceeds from their Christmas concert Dec. 15 will be presented in the form of a bond to one of the local boys or girls in ser­ vice. Donald W. Steinsdorfer of Route 2, McHenry, is serving with a unit composed of electric power and water supply specialists recruited from public utility companies throughout the U.S. After training in North Africa the engineers went into Sicily with the Seventh Army and rebuilt electric power plants in Palermo and Porte Expedocie. They are presently with the con­ tinental advance section in France. Santa, toys collection to take place Dec. 15 TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 3,1959) A preliminary draft of a study planning for the growth of the city of McHenry was presented at a meeting at the city hall last week. Drastic changes in McHenry are indicated as the consultants pro­ ject the growth through the year 1975. A detailed report indicated that far too much money is spent outside of McHenry for certain items. Projection of population growth appeared too conservative to the planning commission members present as well as Mayor George Freund, members of the city coun­ cil, Township Supervisor LeRoy Smith and Earl R. Walsh, city clerk. Tommy Schmidt, 8, of Lilymoor was saved from drowning in Lily Lake after falling through thin ice. Roy H. Miller of McHenry and Robert Wizas, 17, rescued the boy by rowing a boat out and whisking him out of the water just as he lost a grip on a piece of ice. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 6,1974) After considering the matter of entering into a feasibility study with Johnsburg District 12 concer­ ning a new high school in that area, the board of High School District 156 Tuesday night decided against participation. Another step toward construc­ tion of a new bridge over the Fox River won approval Monday at the McHenry County Board meeting. The bridge will connect Pearl Street in the city with Lin­ coln Road in the township. More than 50 local secondary teachers, counselors and ad­ ministrators participated in a graduate seminar entitled, "New Approches to Individualized Lear­ ning," held at West Campus. The McHenry City Council voted to enter into a one-year con­ tract with the McHenry County Department of Health, Division of Veterinary Public Health for cooperative animal control ser­ vice. Three people were taken to Northern Illinois Medical Center (NIMC) Sunday afternoon after a two-car collision at the in­ tersection of Bull Valley Road and Route 31. Thomas J. Sharp, 1508 N. Court St., McHenry, told police he was stopped at the in­ tersection when his car was struck in the rear. Sharp and two passengers, Joseph J. Sharp and Susan M.
