Pafr 22 - I'l.AINDFAI.KH HKH ALU, * EDSESPAV, DECEMBER 11. MM Sports Warrior matmen simply outstanding Miller leads Murphy's There is such a thing as ex ceeding expectations, but this is getjting a little bit ridiculous. McHenry High School's wresti ng, team battled to its third straight dual match victory Fri- dayk a 36-24 decision over Fox Valley Conference rival Crystal Lalfe Central, and finished off an outstanding weekend by finishing second at the Lake Forest Invita tional Saturday. *;)Ve did much better than I had anticipated," admitted Warrior head coach Jerry Rankin. Much better. Forget the in juries, the illnesses, the youth. The 6-1 Warriors are indeed for al. rea ^ I ' m p r e t t y p l e a s e d , " understated Rankin Monday. "We're wrestling well right now." MCHENRY PLAYED host to its first FVC rival, the Tigers of CL Central Friday night Uiris Mann and Kevin Justen wojn by forfeit at 98 and 105, respectively. Russell Bunday returned after a serious leg injury to his first match of the young season, and returned in fine fashion, recording a pin at 40 seconds of the first round. AHe wrestled well, but he's not in top physical condition yet/' Rankin said. "He's 100 percent recovered, but he's not in great shape." ^ IVAN CVITKOV1C won 4-0 at 126 lbs., and Dan Parlsi netted a pin at 41 seconds at 132. Steve Schuerr (155) won by pin at 2:50, and Ron Eayford at 167, won by a 3-2 count. - The Warrior JV team won 34-27, and the freshmen crushed Cen tral, 54-18. What makes the varsity victory all the more impressive is UuU Cvitkovic, Schuerr and Rayfofd are all sophomores, and the only undefeated McHenry wrestler, Tom Wrona (119), was out of ac tion with an illness. AT THE LAKE Forest Invita tional, the Warriors captured se cond behind powerful Deerfield, which totaled 165 points. McHenry had 132%; Lake Forest 130%; Jacobs 113%; Cary-Grove 58%; Zion-Benton 58; Stevenson 56% and Wauconda9%. McHenry's Dennis Gaines (185) was the only Warrior wrestler to win an individual title. Gaines won the championship match by pin in 21 seconds. His record for the season stands at 7-2. Taking seconds for McHenry at Lake Forest were Justen (105), Parisi (132), Wayne Beyer (138) a n d M i k e L o b i n s k y (heavyweight), whose record is 6- 2 for the season. MANN, AT 96 lbs., was a third place finisher, upping his mark to 9-2 on the year, while Bunday (112), Pat MUler (155) and Bill Thomas (167) all finished fourth. While the varsity Warriors were busy wrapping up their fine finish at Lake Forest, their sophomore counterparts were back home, putting the finishing touches on their second straight title at the McHenry Sophomore Tourna ment. McHENRY HAD 168 points, out distancing second place Leyden, with 148, in the eight-team event. Winning first-place honors for McHenry were Aaron Milstein (112), David Parisi (132) and Dan Geske(145). Seconds were garnered by Jason Hoffman (105), Cvitkovic (126), Roger March (138), Rayford (167) and Nick Iodice (heavyweight). Third-place Warrior finishers were Gary Layton (98), and Schuerr (155). "A lot of the sophomores have been wrestling up," Rankin said. "It was nice for them to wrestle as a team, and obviously they did a good job." RANKIN ADMITS he's happy with the route the program is tak ing. "We lost (Chris) Brown, (Ran dy) Hawley and were without Wrona all week," Rankin said, "and we still did pretty well. Yes, I'm pleased." The Warriors, in finishing se cond at Lake Forest, also were able to beat FVC foes Cary-Grove and Jacobs. "Jacobs has some good wrestlers at the heavier weights. They'll be tough in a dual meet." McHenry will travel to Crystal Lake to face South's Gators Fri day night, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, the Warriors will host Waukegan East and Johnsburg in a double dual, set to commence at lp.m. "If we have everyone back and ready to go, we should be in good shape," Rankin said. Brian Miller had a chance to give Johnny Murphy's -- The Gambler a victory. Miller was fouled at the buzzer with the score tied at 58-all, during a McHenry Parks and Recreation Department Men's Basketball League affair. However, Miller missed both free throws, giving State Farm In surance five more mintues to work on their come-from-behind victory. ' But that never occurred, as Miller scored five points in the overtime, atoning for the missed free throws, propelling his team to a 69-64 triumph. Miller led all scorers with 29 points, scoring 13 in the first half as Johnny Murphy's took a com manding 35-22 lead. Ben Himplemann was another Gambler who figured big in his team's offense, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half. Brett Decker was the only other Gambler in double figures with 13 points -- four during the overtime. Greg Davis scored 25 points to lead State Farm Insurance. Davis netted 17 of those points during State Farm's second half com eback rally. The winners are 2-1, while State Farm falls to 1-2. Todd Green led Christopher's Men's Wear to its third straight victory, as he scored 23 points en route to an 82-49 rout of Henehan & Mclntyre. Frank Sexton added 12 points, while both Don Harris and Tim Pankiewicz had 10 each to help Christopher's. Bill Henehan (20 pts ), Dean Bentley (16) and Dan Lalor (10) were the leaders for Henehan & Mclntyre, which fell to 0-3. The Businessmen held off a spirited St. Regis Pub, and won 54- 38 to remain tied for first place with a perfect 3-0 record. St. Regis dropped to 0-3. St. Regis lost playing manager Dave Miller late in the second half when he was kicked out of the game. A pair of technical fouls against the losers didn't help mat ters either. J o h n M e y e r s o f t h e Businessmen led all scorers with 13 points. Don Bentz and Rick Neiss chipped in 12 each. Kevin Weiss was the only Regis player in double figures, with 10. OHNSBURG PUladMler Herald News Service DIXON-It was a long, cold, two-hour bus ride for McHenry County College's men's basketball team, but Coach Mike Capaccio built a halftime fire under the Scots who, in the end, were the owners of a major smoke job. MCC won its third game in a row and improved its record to 4-3 as it used a key four-point play lift the Scots to a 73-61 win over Sauk Valley in a non- conference battle Thursday night. "I tell you, we did not play well at all in the first half. We looked like were asleep out there," Capaccio said. "We made bad passes and the ball was bouncing off our hands. We stood around." So at halftime, despite holding a 31-27 lead the MCC coach said he.,flid his best to warm things up.. The Scots responded by scoring the first six points of the second half, and tallied 12 of the first 16 to open a 43-31 lead. "We did a much better job reboun ding in the second half, especially early in the half," Capaccio said. "We decided to play defense plus, the shots -- (Continued from page 24) started to fall. We worked hard in the second half. I'm always happy to get out of that gym-with a win." MCC will travel to River Forest next Thursday to face the Concordia College junior var sity. The Scots return home for the first time in a month on Dec. 20. 5ses made it 54-53. lohnsburg's Jeff Nichols traded »e throws with Hartmann, mak- the score 56-54, and Marian llled timeout to set up a potential Ime-tying hoop with 18 seconds (play. "We wanted to get the ball to irtmann or Will for a 12- or 14- )t shot," Rokus explained. Especially Will, he was so hot." it give Johnsburg credit, they jnsed it well." larian was forced to punch the ball in to Stevens, whose shot banked too hard. Green, however, cktimed the carom and was fouled bjjj. Husak, his fifth, with just one sjgcondleft. 'We were lucky to find Kurt m," Rokus said. "And it was a ;at rebound by Green, but, we ln't make the free throw." rREEN'S first toss rimmed, Id he missed the second one in- ltionally, trying for a rebound and game-tying bucket. But the ball missed the rim entirely, giv ing JHS the ball out-of-bounds. Skyhawk junior center Tim Shine was fouled and made one of two, accounting for the final 57-54 margin. "I'm real proud oi them," Rokus said of his squad. "They gave a heckuva effort. We could have won it, or at least tied it. But we could have folded too. I'm pro ud of them." Will's 18 points led all scorers, the senior guard pouring in> 14 in the second half. "We just tried to get a hand in his face," said Husak, who had 10 points for Johnsburg. "We knew he was the only guy who could score from outside." "Our games with Marian have always been good ones," Beck said. "It's become a good rivalry." BECK SAID the Hurricanes looked much improved over a few weeks ago, when the two teams met in the Marian Thanksgiving Tournament, Johnsburg emerg ing a big winner. "Marian will be in the hunt (for the conference title) before this season's over," Beck predicted. If Johnsburg's Jree throw shooting improves, so will the Skyhawks. Stevens added 17 for Marian. Johnsburg's balknced attack was paced by Easterling and Dust, with 11 each, and Husak with 10.
