Wrong. McHenry's boys' basketball team took the long way home Fri day night, even after clamping down on a potent Crystal Lake Central offense. But the Warriors' offense did a disappearing act, leaving Coach Ken Ludwig perplexed. "We had them all the way," he said. "Our offense was just stag nant. I don't know what we're go ing to do. We've got to get more scoring, that's all there is to It.",..... Only two Warriors scored in double figures as Central spoiled McHenry's Fox Valley Con ference debut, 38-37. McHENRY'S defense shined all night, even when a well-covered Rich Stempinski sank the game- winning shot with 13 seconds left. "It went right off the rim and bounced the right way for him. Defensively, our kids did a good job," Ludwig said. "(Central's Bill) Heppner being out made a difference. We practiced all week with him in there." The 6-6 sophomore, hobbled by the flu, played sparingly for Cen tral (2-0, 3-3). Meeting Central without one of its key players was a golden opportunity tor McHenry, but the Warriors didn't take advantage. "On offense we refused to run. We've got to be able to run," said Ludwig, who's called his 1984-85 team his quickest in eight seasons. RUNNING HELPS, but getting the ball in the bucket is the main concern. The Warriors received a failing grade in that department, connecting on just 33 percent of their shots (14-of-43). Nonetheless, they still had a chance to win the Wirtz said, optimistically. "They 8an}e- . beat us 21-18 in the second half." After Stempinski gave Central a Wirtz noted Wauconda has been 38;37 lead» Ludwig called time tabbed to win the Northwest with 11 seconds left. Freund finished with four points. Senior forwards Pat Dunne and Craig Hill led McHenry with 13, and 11, respectively. Next was J.R.Wright with six. "I wish I could figure out our of fense. Our kids are better shooters than they showed," Ludwig said. BASKETBALL IS the main game for Central coach Arnie Kay, but he might fare pretty well on a chessboard as well. "It just ended up digressing into a chess match," Kay said. "When it gets down to three or four minutes in a one- or two-point game, that's what happens. "If you want to win a conference championship, you have to win these kinds of games. I'm real happy with the way the kids hung inthere." Even after McHenry reeled off the second quarter's first six points to take a 14-8 lead, Central refused to give up. The Tigers stayed close in the third quarter when McHenry threatened to blow the game open, and rallied from a 35-31 deficit with 4:45 left to play. CENTRAL SHOT 42 percent (15- of-36). Mike Harvel found the hoop just twice, but his second bucket was one of the game's biggest. - After falling behind 35-31 on a lay-up by Hill, Kay took timeout with 4:38 left. Central worked the ball to Harvel, who sank a short jumper. "We were down by four and had to get a good shot. Mike Harvel got that good shot. We needed that to get back in the game. If we miss it, it's all in their hands," Kay said. After the ball exchanged hands several times, Central worked it around to Jeff Aldridge, who waltzed in for an easy lay-up and 35-all tie with 1:56 left. DUNNE, HOWEVER, wasn't quite through, as he swished a shot home with 1:27 left for a 37-35 Warrior advantage. Kay took another timeout with 1:10 remaining. The inbounds pass went to 6-7 senior Mike Williams, who was hammered by Wright, his fifth foul. Williams sank the first freebie with 1:09 left to trim McHenry's lead to 37-36. His second attempt bounced to Dunne, and McHenry was back in business. ' But It wasn't the Warriors' night. McHenry set up for one shot, but Aldridge stole the bali and ran the length of the court, on ly to miss a lay-up. During the ensuing rebound, Harvel sent Freund to the line, but throw bounced oft le rim to Stempinski. Certtrtl called time with 23 seconds left to set up the winning shot. "OF COURSE, Rich hit a big bucket at the end. Well, he's a quality athlete," Kay said. Stem- pinski's six fourth-quarter free throws put Crystal Lake South on ice In the FVC opener Nov. 30.
