V- Spring Grove hatchery helps boost state's fish population SECTION - PAGK 3 - PLAINDKALER HERALD. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, WM Since July 1983, the new state of-the art Illinois Fish Hatchery System has stocked more than 56 million fish of 15 different species in 245 lakes, im poundments, rivers and streams from Chicago to Cario, ac cording to Mike Conlin, chief of the Department of Con servation's Division of Fish and Wildlife. The heart of the system is the Sand Ridge Fish Hatchery in Mason County, which is com -j plemented by the renovated and expanded Little Grassy Fish Hatchery near Carbondale, and an older hatchery at Spring Grove. Actual production at the three Illinois hatcheries totaled 23.7 million for Fiscal Year 1984, with some of the stocked fish coming from other facilities. All of the stocked fish were processed through the hatchery system, however. This figure is a more than 250 percent in crease from Fiscal Year 1983 which was, in turn, a more than 300 percent increase over Fiscal Year 1982, and a more than 950 percent increase from Fiscal Year 1981. . "This recently concluded fiscal year marked the second year of operation and the first complete production year for the Illinois Hatchery System," •Conlin said. "It was a year of many firsts. For the first time ;all the catchable rainbow trout • were produced here in Illinois. ' For the first time, all coho and I chinook salmon stocked in Lake Michigan were produced here, and 100 percent of the walleye fry were stocked through the hatchery system. We are well on our way toward achieving the system's 48 million fish a year potential." Currently, the system is operating at 60 percent of an ticipated production capacity, Conlin stated. If funding and manpower needs at the two sites continue to be met, Conlin predicted that the system will reach 100 percent capacity within two years. "We are pleased with our progress," Conlin-said. "The complexity and experimental nature of certain aspects of the operation made it imperative that we adopt a gradually expanding production schedule. "Fish hatchery technology represents a very inexact science," Conlin said. "You just don't walk in on dedication day, turn on the lights and water, and start cranking out millions of fish. - We are exploring a new technological frontier at Sand Ridge w^ich demands a cautious, conservation ap proach. To date, we can report that all our goals have been met or exceeded." Conlin explained that the distribution of fish produced by the system is being carried out according to a long-range stocking plan. The plan in corporates the result of numerous fisheries surveys carried out across the state by Illinois State Police give fatal accident statistics ; The Superintendent of Illinois State Police, Laimutis A. Nargelenas, announced today the latest figures which indicate that during the month of November, 94 persons died from injuries sustained from traffic accidents on Illinois streets and highways. State Police, District 2, which covers Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane and DuPage Counties, reports two hundred and seventeen. 217 persons have been killed in those counties since Jan. 1. Conlin warned Illinois anglers not to expect a miracle over night resulting from stocking increases. "What we will see is a gradual increase in fishing quality over the next three to five years," he said. "There is no doubt, however, that the new Illinois Fish Hatchery System eventually will have a dramatic and positive impact on the state's fishery resource. the experience begins December 18! persons were also killed during the same period in 1983 in those counties. A breakdown of the counties for statistics in November, shows Lake County, 12 fatalities; McHenry County had one fatality; DuPage County had seven fatalities; Kane County had two fatalities and DeKalb County had one fatalit^. There have been 1,414 persons killed in the entire state in 1984. There were 1,421 persons killed in the same time period of 1983 showing a decrease of seven. ICanonl Sale 379.99 Reg. 429.99.
