I'age 4 • PLAINDEALER HERALD, WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 12.1994 This doctor's office magazine is really old! This is getting started a little on the late side, but away we go. A few days ago, I took Alvina back to Dr. Alvary's office for a check-up on the results of that bumpity-bump fall. As we entered the door, Joanne Houghton (nurse in charge of needles) handed me a copy of "The New Yorker". I looked, then looked again. It was dated February 21,1925 and it sold for 15 cents. ' This came about after my several mentions of old, old magazines in doctors offices. * ' M A year old magazine is con sidered a late edition. & . -- 1 My 1925 New Yorker is a treasure I will read over and over again. * Catching the Christmas spirit hasn't been easy, but Anne Sowers' Wonder Lake column iast week gives me a lift. * At least Anne's references starts me out in low gear toward higher speed. JUST THINKING: There oughta be a law against the automobile barkers selling cars on TV. We were lucky. - A very nifty gingerbread house graces our dining room table after a lucky draw at the Longhorn. Lee Lippert, super chef at Longhorn, made the master piece and delivered it to our home. That time of year is here again when weathermen tell us about the wind chill. We wouldn't be cold if they didn't ring in that chill. Pie and Zoe never forget. A beautiful hand painted card came our way. Zoie is the artist. The girls also sent a newspaper clipping that gives me a chuckle. Jobs are scarce up in Winchester, WI and a help wanted ad is a doozy. A fellow is looking for a strong male- age 18-89. Wow! You should see the list of chores the employee will be, required to do. The poor guy will have to work 50 hours a week or get fired. Guess I dodged that question before, but will yield now. "Si" Meyer and Arnie An derson are my choices. Both were steady and dependable. Watching Santa reminds me of years when I wore that red suit and visited schools and kid parties. Think I was chosen because I didn't need a pillow. OLD SAYING: All over like Paddy's flea. Arnold Rauen came back from Florida just in time for a cold spell in McHenry. Why would he do such a thing? I dunno. All I know is what I hear and I hear that a psychiatrist has been engaged to delve into the problem. Dick. Hester says - he remembers all those "getting ready for winter" items. Maybe so. But he is only 73 years old! Our grandson, Brendan, has hung a tricky feeder from our tree for the squirrels. He is betting they will get to it. I'm betting the other way. A letter from Harold J. Peterson, formerly of Mineral Springs for 25 years, now of Waukegan. Harold is looking for a copy of a poem which he says was run in this column. He says, "It was about the destiny of the world, as I recall it had something to do ytfth the time women wore pants. It was the beginning of the end." Would like to help Harold, but can't recall the poem. Are any of you old enough to remember?
