I»«gc »»PLAINPEALEB HERALD. WKUSKSDAV; DECEMBKR 12.1984 Life today League of women voters to discuss household waste PAUL BAZAN AND SUE HANSEN Household hazardous waste and ways to recycle are two of the topics to be discussed at the Dec. 13, unit meeting of the Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters. There is a concern over household hazardous waste because a wide range of household products, including cleansers, solvents, pesticides, and anti-freeze, pose a risk to people or the environment when they are disposed. Many times the housewife is unaware of the hazardous nature of these substances as she washes them down drains or dumps them in the trash. Mary Ryan, customer relations representative,, of Waste Management, will ex plain the dangers and methods of disposing of hazardous household waste. Recycling, the processing of wastes to recover materials that can be reused, another im portant environmental topic, will also be discussed at Thursday's meeting. Although most people will agree with the necessity of recycling, few people actually practice it. Alice Howenstine, from the McHenry County Defender's recycling program, will explain the methods of effectively and easily recycling everyday household trash. The Dec. 13 meeting is at 9:30 a.m. at the Free Methodist Church, 934 Seminary (Rt. 47), in Woodstock. The public is invited to attend the meeting. Babysitting is provided. For more information call LWV president, Barbara Marrs, 385- 1434. Sound familiar? Almost everyone has used this rationalization at some point to justify overeating that ac companies the holiday season. The problem with that statement, said Mary Pergander, R.D., is it allows poor eating habits to be per petuated. A good weight-control program must include good bating habits at all times of the year; even during the holidays. Does this mean Christmas cook ie s a r e comple t e ly o f f limits? No. Pergander offers these tips to help control one's eating while still enjoying the holidays: ...Plan what you'll be eating for the entire day to avoid those inevitable weak moments when you cannot decide what to eat and temptations are at their peak. You'll stick to your "plan" more than you might think. ...Keep holiday "goodies" out of sight. This really will help put them out of mind. ...Snacking can ruin any good we igh t - con t ro l p rog ram, especially late-night snacking. Remember, this is the time of day when your energy needs are at their lowest. If the urge to snack is too much for you, be v sure to have low-calorie snacks on hand. Fresh vegetables are an excellent substitution fof usual snacking fare. A low- calorie dip is easy; just mix one carton of plain low-fat yogu4 with one package of ranch salad dresslrtg rtui. Other lOw-calorie snacks mighf include pretzel#, unbuttered popcorn, die(t gelatin, broth and diet beverages. j ...Holiday meals pose a threat to even the best-intended dieter, Minimize problems by sticking to only one helping of your favorites, and use a small platp so it looks full more quickly. Eat meals slowly. Remember, it takes 20 minutes for the satiety value of your meal to reach your brain. This applies to buffets as well. Just "one little hors d'oeuvre" might not have that many calories, but they add up quickly. >> ...Alcohol can be another problem. One mixed drink can have as many or more calories than a candy bar. If you do partake of holiday "spirits," dilute drinks with ice, water or club soda and sip them slowly. A glass of dry white wine has fewer calories* than most alcohol-containing beverages. ...Most importantly, take one day at a time. If you do fail one day, don't let it signal failure for the entire holiday season. Every day is a perfect op portunity to better control your eating habits.
