Correct pesticide storage helps maintain the quality and ef fectiveness of these products and safeguards against ac cidental poisonings of people and pets. The (EXTENSION) People AMml Store pesticides in a separate cabinet, room, or building, depending upon the amount of chemicals on hand. Do not store cleaning products, pesticide handling equipment such as gloves, boots, or goggles, or other supplies in the same cabinet to prevent con tamination. The storage area should stay cool, but not freeze, and should be dry and out of direct sunlight. An exhaust fan may be used to reduce high temperatures and toxic fumes. Storage in a well- ventilated area will also help control the buildup of fumes. The storage area should be kept locked at all times, even when chemicals are being used. It is also a good idea to label all doors and other entrances with the phrase, "Danger * - Pesticides, Keep Out!" or other warning. Herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, and other pesticide types should be stored on separate ̂ shelves within the storage cabinet to help guard^against con tamination. Never set sacks or boxes of pesticides on the floor; store them on shelves or other support to protect them from moisture. Cat litter, vermiculite, sawdust, activated charcoal, or absorptive clay should be handy to soak up spills. A shovel, broom, dustpan and proper fire extinguisher should also be nearby. Check pesticide containers often for leaks, loose caps, or corrosion. With proper care, pesticides can be stored safely so that accidental poisoning does not occur and the products will remain effective for future use. Almost everyone takes some type of medication from time to time. But for people with ar thritis, taking medication is usually a daily activity, the costs of which can be enormous. In a move to help relieve some of the financial burdens of such medication, the Arthritis Foundation has established a discount pharmacy surface. According to Mrs. Everett L. Hollis, president of the Foun dation's Illinois Chapter, the discount pharmacy service is available to all Arthritis Foundation members and their immediate families. "Anyone can become a member of the Arthritis Foundation at a cost of $10 per year," Mrs. Hollis said. "And by taking advantage of the discount pharmacy service a member will recoup his or her $10 fee many times over in savings on medication." She noted that the service can be used to obtain discounts on all prescription drugs, not only those related to the treatment of arthritis. The program, which is ad ministered by the Federal Pharmacy Service of Madrid, Iowa, also offers its users the convenience of mail-order shopping. Perscriptions are filled the same day they are received and shipped via parcel post or United Parcel Service. "Customers never have to travel further than their mailboxes to obtain their medications," Mrs. Hollis stated. The service also provides each customer with complete reports of purchases which are ac ceptable for insurance reim bursement and tax purposes. Mrs. Hollis emphasized that the discount pharmacy service operates under the strictest of professional standards and maintains a rigid quality control system. All prescriptions are reviewed and filled by a licensed pharmacist. Generic equivalents for certain drugs may be substituted upon request, unless the prescribing physician prohibits such a move. For details on the discount pharmacy service, write the Arthritis Foundation, Illinois Chapter, 79 W. Monroe St., Chicago, 60603, or call (800) 572- ,2397.
