Three of today's leading men's fashion designers have come up with a list of gift suggestions for the men on everyone's hol iday shopping lists. They should know, since they are this year's winners of the Cutty Sark Men's Fashion Awards, the "Oscars" of men's fashion, voted by the country's fashion writers. According to Perry Ellis, who won the Outstanding U.S. Designer title, the first shopping rule for menswear gifts is: Stick with quality. "It may cost more." he says, "but buy ing Clothes isn't the time to scrimp. You'll forget about the price long before the clothes are worn out. and with quality fab rics and construction, that won't be for a long time." One of his all-around gift suggestions is his handknit alpaca turtlencck sweater in winter white. "It's easy and simple, and designed to last through many winters " Ease and simplicity are also the fashion recommendations of Italy's Giorgio Ar mani, named the top international de signer in this year's Cutty Sark Awards. A most impressive gift, he suggests, is a sports jacket, and he advises shoppers to focus on the texture of the fabric instead of on trendy silhouettes and other short-lived gimmicks. America's Andrew Fezza, who was awarded the sportswear designer trophy at this year's Cutty Sank ceremonies, agrees, "The best clothes are those made of the f inest fabrics. So forget the cutesy zippers and other hardware." For the truly fashion-aware man, he recommends a gift like leather or suede pants. "They spell quality, and they get even better with age," notes Fezza. As the year's top authorities in mens wear. this threesome also reminds gift- shoppers to carry a list of shirt, sweater, jacket and pants sizes for each name on the list. And. they say. shop at quality stores that will gladly exchange for a different size or color. Also, it's always a touch of class to in elude a gift of the holiday spirits for which their fashion designer awards are named. Weeks of anticipation burst into gleeful shouts and satisfied smiles as children open packages of their long awaited favor ites -- roller skates, walkie talkies, adven ture games, action kits, pull toys. Intrigued by the novelty and newness of these toys, children spend endless holiday hours in rough and rugged play. Mom and Dad's interruption to announce a holiday visit is usually accompanied by a ritual of changing from rumpled playwear to a fashionable holiday Imik. Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat. Please to put a penny in the old man's hat; If you haven't got a penny, a ha 'penny will do. If you haven 7 got a ha 'penny, God bless -VOM* -- Anonymous Parents and kids alike will appreciate , the Velcro' fastenings on shirts, pants and jumpers, and ample neck openings which take the chore out of dressing. These practical features are enhanced by fashion colors and styling just right for playwear for play time and holidaywear for special visits by designing a line of hol iday outfits that combine practical features with a fashion look. Dressing up in holiday best can take precious play time from budding archi tects and space explorers. To provide more England was merry England, when Old Christmas brought his sports again.
