FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, W§4 Emergency reliet statistics released Weight control class slated « FIFTY YEARS AGO Taken from the files of Dec. 13, 1034) The cost of providing relief for 489 families on the rolls in McHenry county during the month of September was $13,188, as revealed in the monthly bulletin on relief statistics just issued by the statistical department of the Illinois Emergency Relief commission. Tliere was a drop of 31.4 percent in the number of families cared for from the preceeding month and the average cost of relief for families on the rolls in Sep­ tember was $22.37. The town­ ship share of the federally and state fundecPamount was about one percent. Approximately $8,000 was distributed by the West wice McHenry State Bank last week to Christmas savings club members. This together with the activities of local merchants is expected to cause some stimulation in business in the trading area in McHenry during the Christmas season. Bounties on six foxes caught in the county in three days have been paid at the county cleric's office. Hunters who received $3 for each fox killed are from Chemung, Seneca, Dorr and Greenwood townships. While the sun was shining in this vicinity Monday, more than 10 inches of snow fell in Chicago and drifts were piled high in the streets. Santa was slated to appear Dec. 15 at the William H. Althoff Hardware store. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 14, 1944) The annual Christmas program presented by the Methodist church school will be given Sunday evening, Dec. 17. Among the presentations will be: "Merry Christmas" by Joan Collins, "What They Say" by Penny Fike, "A Day of Joy" by Elaine Vycital, "The Door Bell" by Donna Do we, "A Plan for Santa" by Homer Bassett, and "A Beginner's Wish" by Dianne Reitesel. The Christmas greeting "Vroolfyk Kerstfest" has been sent to the Plaindealer staff by Sgt. E. J. Meyer. Our first three Christmas cards arrived from Italy, Germany and Belgium respectively. Toys requested from children sending letters to Santa included a panda bear, farm sets, a Lone Ranger suit, a bride doll, hard toe hockey skates, doll and acessories, a machine gun and an aircraft gun. Trains, cars, fire engines and coloring books were also favored. * TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 10, 1959) Harry Hetterman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hetterman of Johnsburg, received a trophy for "most valuable player of the year" awarded at the annual Kiwanis football banquet. A local polio victim is receiving help through the National Foundation for Polio. A1 Fritz, 30, of Sunnyside is undergoing treatment at Warm Springs, Ga. for the illness which struck him three years ago. Another little girl who un­ derwent surgery after both legs were paralyzed was Sheila Peterson, 10, of Cooney Heights. McHenry stores announced they would be open evenings beginning Dec. 14. The McHenry Theatre featured the "fabulous" Fabian in "Hound Dog Man." Xmas trees, balsams, Norway pines, Blue Spruce and Scotch Pines sold for one dollar and up at the Dairy Frost on Route 120, east of the bridge. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 13, 1974) , The West Campus Madrigal Singers will present their first madrigal dinners Dec. 15 and 16. A traditional menu of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, Wassail bowl, salad, potatoes, rolls and coffee will be served, topped off with dessert of Cherries Jubilee. Throughout the dinner, old English Christmas carols will be sung by the Madrigal singers and the wenches (serving maids). The Landfill committee of the McHenry County board met last week in its continuing search to locate a suitable site for county landfill. Kenneth Peterson - was presented with a key to the city of McHenry by Mayor Joseph Stanek during the McHenry County Defenders' presentation program of the Theta award last Sunday at West Campus. Peterson received the gift for his cooperation in making land available for a new city park to be located on the south side of McCullom Lake road, near the Northwestern railroad tracks. An organizational meeting to form a McHenry County Youth Services Bureau was held at McHenry East Campus recently. A committee was chosen to work on a grant for the proposed service organization. The Lake Region YMCA, in Crystal Lake, has developed a special program called Diet Free, which helps men and women lose weight and keep it off. The annual program will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. The first free introduction will be held Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. (no obligation). The Diet Free program concentrates on lifestyle ad­ justments that will help persons back on the road to a thinner and healthier life. His topic will be "Heart disease" and The Mended Hearts, Inc. programs. Dee Budeleir, a registered dietician will speak on "Decreasing risk factors through nutrition" at the Jan. 15 meeting. In February the group will hear from Kathleen Harrison, R.N., whose topic will be, "The value of CPR to the family and friends." Dr. Neil Reese, DDS will address the March meeting and will speak on "The importance of good dental care to heart disease patients." The Heart Association invites everyone to attend the in­ formative meetings. There is no fee or membership costs for the programs.
