The event HP ̂ . .. Peterson honored for word skills An East Campus senior, Jennifer B. Peterson, is one of 850 students across the nation who have been recognized for outstanding writing per formance. Peterson recently received the National Council of Teachers of English Award for superior performance in writing. Peterson said her ability in writing has been developed through a lot of hard work. She said that grammar and punc tuation rules were not difficult for her to learn, but that writing requires a lot more than just learning the rules. One com position, which she entered in the contest, was written to discuss how the vision of the American dream still applies in modern-day America. The composition was based on her reading of "Giants in the Earth" and "Grapes of Wrath." In commenting on how she developed her writing technique, Peterson attributed much of her growth to her fresh man composition teacher. "Ms. Schnelker was a great teacher; she provided me with a lot of ideas and helped expand my vocabulary." Schnelker has taught English and Journalism courses at East Campus since 1981. The Council's achievement awards in writing are based on very rigorous criteria and judging. All compositions were read by two judges: one high school and one college English instructor. In selecting the winners, the judges looked for writing that demonstrated ef fective and imagmitive use of English to inform and move an audience. mm Jill#" *11 «• WOODSTOCK FARM t LAWS CENTER r and WAYNE FEEDS Have teamed up to better Serve your livestock feed and animal health needs.
