McHenry woman finds joy in song writing B^MarkBaus • ' Plain dealer Herald News Service Dorothy Hollander has been writing songs for many years, but there is one song she's written that she'll remember for a long time. Hollander was a music teacher in McHenry for 18 years and during that time she wrote a lot of songs for her students. Last year she wrote a song titled "Cabbage Patch Baby" and her students loved it. "When I taught them the song they just loved it, they loved to sing it," Hollander said. "I got the idea when the Cabbage Patch craze started, but it isn't a song about the doll. The cabbage patch is an old term of endearment. In France, the story goes that all children come from the cabbage patch." * The song seemed so special to Hollander that she decided she would like to record it. She began looking for the right person to sing the song on the recording. When Hollander heard that the musical 4'Annie" was playing at the Woodstock Opera House, she went to a per formance hoping to find the right child to sing her song. "I had had an older girl record the song, but I thought that it should be a young child," Hollander said. Hollander did find the right girl to sing the song that night. Heather Adelphia of Woodstock, a fifth grader at Olson Elementary School who played the part of Annie in the musical, agreed to record the song. Hollander and Heather went t o a s t ud io in Lombard along wirf three of Hollander's former students and three neighbor children who she knew sang in their church choir. After about an hour in the studio the song was recorded and soon after, 1,000 copies of the record were pressed. "When I got the first 1,000 records, I gave most of them Local police issue citations in connection with accidents A one-car accident resulted in two citations for the driver in volved and a damaged vehicle. Raymond Raemont, 4935 Abbington, McHenry, was charged with driving under the influence and improper backing after the car he was driving backed down eastbound Sand burg Drive at Abbington and struck a stop sign. Raemont was unable to give police any details about how the accident occurred. Dennis F. May, 7020 Mason Hill Road, McHenry, was charged with failure to yield the right-of-way following a two-car collision at the intersection of Front Street and Bull Valley Road Dec. 27. The? driver of the other car, Bernadine Hockett, 1705 Oakleaf, McHenry, told police she stopped at the sign and proceeded into the intersection. She then swerved to avoid the May auto. May told police he checked both right and left but did not see the Hockett vehicle when he pulled into the in- tersection. Two area drivers had a little trouble with sno^plows recently. Bruce Koepke, 1005 River Road, was plowing the parking lot at 3510 W. Elm St., when a car collided with the back of his truck. The driver of the other car, Mary L. Miller, 5105 Dartmoor, McHenry, said a trailer blocked her view and the collision oc curred as the Koepke vehicle started to back up. In a separate incident, Richard J. Stull, 4516 Garden Quarter, McHenry, was maneuvering a city snowplow when contact was made with a car driven by John P. Mulvihill. Mulvihill, of 4702 N. Fox Lane, told police he was following the snowplow when it stopped and started to back up at the in tersection of Crystal Lake Road and Royal Drive. He sounded the horn, but the collision oc curred. 4 No citations were issued in either instance. away because I thought that would be best way to get people to listen to it," Hollander said. Those first copies were gone in two or three days and Hollander knew that the song was something special. AfteHhree more pressings the record has started to sell. " "The song is really just a lullaby to anything you love. When my students would sing it r would have them bring in anything that they cared for, whether it was a Cabbage Patch doll or an old doll or toy they had," Hollander said. "Many of the kids couldn't find or couldn't' afford a Cabbage Patch doll, but it didn't matter. All that mat tered was that they could sing it to someone they love or care for."^ The'record has cost Hollander about $1,000 to make. She hasn't made any profit from the sale of the record. "My payment has beemthe miraculous experience I've had seeing so many people enjoying my song," she said.
