Marian hold off Wauconda WAUCONDA - It's kind of ary to think how many teams _ iarian Central could defeat if they played four solid quarters of sound basketball every time out. Friday night, Wauconda found out the hard way even though the Hurricanes played well in three periods. But those three stanzas, Hurricanes Coach Hans Rokus said, "were three of the finest quarters we've played all year." Marian won its third game in a row paced by Andy Hartlieb's 28 points as the Hurricanes hdd off a Wauconda rally, 71-67, in a Northwest Suburban Conference battle Friday night. "For thelmsthalf, even most of the first three quarters, we played as good a game as we ever have," a pleased Rokus said. "Our shot selection was good and we shot well. I was especially happy with our defense. UJC 1U go strictly i the zone I "Our scouting report on them was that we could go man-to man on tbem," he continued. "It was the first time we decided to man and not switch to zone like we normally do. He kids did a real good Job on the defense." HARTLIEB TALLIED 12 of his game-high total in the first quarter as the Hurricanes bolted to an 18-12 lead. "He had the hot hand early so we isolated for hima couple of times and .ve got him the ball," Rokus said of his 6-foot senior guard. "He made some shots from the wing against their zone and got a couple on drives to the hoop.". Marian doubled its first- quarter point output by tallying 18 more markers in the second half. Patience on offense and a stingy defense that made Wauconda earn every one of its baskets allowed Marian some breathing room, 36-26, at the intermission. In the third quarter, the 'Canes came out and struck quickly, but the Bulldogs went to A full-court press that got them back into the game. Depsite the up-tempo play by the hosts, Marian was soil able to win the quarter, 18-17, and entered the final stanza with a 54-43 lead. Another quick start to kick off the quarter saw the Hurricanes tally six of the first eight points to grab a 60-45 lead. However, the Bulldogs responded with a tear of their own that alomst cost the Hurricanes the contest. WAUCONDA outscored Marian, 16-3, in the next several minutes to cut the once- comfortable margin to 6JHH with 2:00 to play. "They were getting the breaks on,a couple of calls and we didn't get quite as many," Rokus said. "That allowed them to stop the clock and get back into the game on free throws. And they did hit their free throws in the fourth quarter." In the final eight minutes,' Wauconda canned 14roM6 free throws. Freshman Jim Hartlieb sank two big free throws to re- >lish Marian' lead and, after a' shot, Mike Green more free shots to ice the con test. "We proved that, we can get the lead, and even though we lost it, we proved we can nit the free throws under pressure, too. It was a real nice one to hang oo to," Rokus said. "I thought Jim Hartlieb did an outstanding job ais did. Steve Lalor v who came off the bench and dRi a super job on the boards once Curt Stevens fouled out," Tom Will, who tallied 13 points for the Hurricanes, scored seven markers in the fourth quarter before fouling out of the contest. Friday night, the Hurricanes will travel to Round Lake. Johnsburg wrestlers twice victorious in weekend outings The fun continued for the wrestl ing team at Johnsburg High School this past weekend, as the Skyhawks won two of three mat ches to raise their dual meet record to 9-6 overall. "We wrestled well again," said JHS coach Mike Roberts. Thursday night, Johnsburg top pled Richmond-Burton in a non- conference dUal, 33-24. ' On Saturday, in a double dual with Lake Zurich and Harvard, the Skyhawks downed LZ 45-22 to ra|se their Northwest Suburban Conference record to 4-1, but lost to a powerhouse Harvard team, 36-25. Leading the way in the Lake Zurich win were Jim Walker (126), who won by a fall in :49 of the first round; Shaun Kee (138) a 1:28 pin; Brian Hauck (145) a pin in 3:47; and Pat Bjerning (185), who pinned his opponent in 3:24. Heavyweight Bob Bentz won his match by a 9-3 score. AGAINST HARVARD, the Skyhawks got off to a slow start in the lower weights, and couldn't quite catch the tough Hornets. "We were down 23-0 by the time we got to Walker's match," said Roberts. "And he was losing in the final :24 of that one. But he came back to win by three, 13-10, and we really wrestled well in the middle and upper weights." x David Thorn (132) tied his Har vard opponent; Hauck pinned in 4:22; Mark Dumelle (167) won 19- 4; Bjerning recovered to claim an 8-5 triumph and Bentz recorded a pin in 2:43. It wasn't enough to overtake Harvard, but it was an impressive showing nonetheless. "OUr best performances this weekend were by Hauck and Bjer ning," Roberts said. "Brian had walking pneumonia earlier this season, and he's really starting to come around now. And Pat really wrestled hard too. "GUYS LIKE Dumelle, Walker, Bentz, you know they're going to win. But these other guys are wrestling so hard. They really did well this weekend." The Skyhawks are currently in a second-place tie with Round Lake behind NWSC-lejfeing Grant, a team which Roberts said will not be beaten in the conference. "No way they'll lose," he said. "We still have Round Lake left, the last week of the season. 'They're very tough, definitely. But we've got things rolling again, and hopefully we can build the momentum into the Round Lake match. We know they're better than we are. But we're coming on." The Jan. 25 match will be at Round Lake. The Skyhawks-wUl travel to Grayslake Friday for a con ference battle with the Rams.
