Dear Molly Milligan: I have a beautiful cofcction of antique perfume bottles. How can I best display them on a table top? Andrea, Bangor, ME 1 > Dear Andrea: When you display a collection of perfun.e bottles, or anything else for that matter, you must take into consideration the collection, the table, and how they will look together. For example, a heavy paper weight collection would look silly on a delicate cigarette table, just as a collection of miniature porcelains would be lost on a massive library table. *. ? Generally, most collections look best when grouped, rather than randomly placed So display your possessions thoughtfully. When planning a table arrangement, leave enough space for a cup of tea, a maga/inc, a book. - ' : - , J Display your perfume bottles on a mirrored tray to double :he effect. Use accent lighting. A spotlight or a candle will dra* attention to your treasures. You might also place your perfume bottles or. a glass table and light them f-om underneath. This would be unusual and dramatic. <Q The whole idea is to have fun looking at your glass menagerie If your arrangement becomes stale, change it. Your collection can »ake on a whole new dimension simply by moving ii to another spot. Dear Molly Milligan: i am single and I work for a large corporation. My job requires that I move every six or eight months. I can handle the transition from city to city, but my furniture cannot. It's shot. I want to buy fnrniture that will tolerate two moves a year. Any suggestions? Roberta, St. Louis Dear Roberta: Why buy when you can rent? You can rent just about any kind of furniture at a fraction of what new furniture will cost. Renting cuts down on the stress of packing and the expense of moving. But the best reason for renting furniture is that it enables you to completely furnish your new place in as little as 24 hours. You can even change your furniture style from city to city. Because so many young executives are choosing to rent, rather than buy, furniture, there is a greater range of styles and fabrics now available. You can rent ahnost anything - from a dining table to a demitasse. Many rental showrooms offer decordfor service. Should you decide to settle down, and want to keep what you are renting, most firms offer a purchase option. If you'd like additional information on where f.o rent furniture in your area, or where you plan to relocate, the Furniture Rental Association of America (FRAA) has a toll free number to call: I-8OO-FOR-RENT. Calls can be made from all the United States except Alaska, Hawaii and Ohio. Consumers in those states can call the FRAA office number collect: 614-895-1273. If you have a question for Your Home Decorator, send it along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Molly Milligan, P.O. Box 14, Dundee, IL 60118. Allow four weeks for a reply. Trial-size products are difficult to find By June Fuller Dear June-Is there anything that can be done about trial-size products that can't be found in the stores? I occasionally see an advertisement for a new product included is a coupon for a free trial size. I search the stores but rarely do I find it. I wonder if other people have ,the same problem?~Mrs, - E. Kocher, Frazeysburg, Ohio. The Coupon Clipper Boating course scheduled The Chain-O-Lakes Power Squadron will offer a public boating course beginning at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Grant High School in Fox Lake. The 10-lesson course, taught by USPS volunteers, provides information on the following subjects: handling under nor mal conditions; handling under adverse conditions; rules of the road; compass and chart familiarization; running lights and equipment; boat trailering; inland boating and mariner's compass and piloting. Dear Mrs. Kocher-Each year manufacturers introduce several thousand new products. Most of the manufacturers will use coupons to get consumers to try them. , From the manufacturer's point of view, the surest way to get a consumer to try a product is to offer a free sample. So, why don't we see more of those trial sizes? The primary reason is that offering free trial is the most expensive way to introduce a new product. When free trial- size coupons appear in newspapers or arrive in the mail, this doesn't mean the manufacturers are making an unlimited supply of trial sizes available to retailers. Quite the contrary. To keep down these s a m p l i n g e x p e n s e s ^ manufacturers limit the number of trial-size packages they distribute. Stores that serve several thousand customers each week, many of whom may have clipped out the free trial size coupon, may receive only a few dozen trial-size packages to distribute. Some stores decide they don't have the aisle space to accept the trial-size display. The trial-size situation is made even worse by those shoppers who see nothing wrong with stocking up on trial sizes, especially when the coupons offer them free. I frequently receive letters from readers who tell me of using free coupons to buy several dozen trial-size packages. This has caused me to stop and wonder, "Is this the right thing to do?" What do you think? Should the manufacturers place limits on the number of trial sizes a shopper can purchase? Should they be required to place more trial sizes in the stores if they widely distribute free trial-size coupons? Or should they just forget about trial sizes and give us high value coupons on their tegular-size packages? Please write and let us know what you think. You can write to me in care of this newspaper.
