TOe Hurricanes erased a 12- point Round Lake first-half lead, but were unable to overcome a 13-point second-half deficit, 71-62. er we trailed them 12-0,1 thought we played them real well. I was real pleased with the way we played/' Marian Cen tral Coach Hans Rokus said. The loss, which dropped Marian's record to 2-5 in the Northwest Suburban Conference and 4-8 overall, overshadowed the performances of Jim Har- tlieb and Kurt Stevens. Stevens led Marian's attack with 18 points while Hartlieb, a fresh man in his first starting role, scored 15 on seven field goals. "Their two big players (Greg Kreitner and Fred Ptak) are pretty good players and Kurt did a nice job inside. He took it to the bucket real strong," Rokus said. STEVENS' SHOWING also earned respect from Round Lake Coach Bob Ward. "We've noticed he's really improved since Christmas," Ward said. And Hartlieb earned some respect as well. "Jim has been doing a real nice job. The biggest thing about him is his composure. He played like an upperclassman," Rokus said of the freshmAn The Hurricanes, on the strength of a 17-14 second quarter advantage, trailed just 30-29 at halftime. Marian stayed with Round Lake through the first four minutes of the third period. Jim Hartlieb's 18-footer brought the Hurricanes to within a point at 40-99. That shot was the fifth straight to go in for the visitors. Stevens answered a Round Lake bucket to once again pull the Hurricanes to within a point, this time at 42-41 with 4:04 remaining. But that's when the Panthers began to pull away. ROUND ILAKE scored U unanswered points to take a 52- 41 lead with 1:25 left. Ptak, who led all scorers with 25 points, contributed four, Jeff Keske had four and Kreitner two in the stretch. The Panthers won the quarter, 24-14. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, missed three straight shots and committed two turnovers. Jim Hartlieb finally broke the four-minute Marian dry spell with 57 seconds left. Brian Horn answered with a 13-foot jumper that gave Round Lake a 54-43 lead after three. Round Lake built the margin to 13 points early in the fourth quarter. Two Horn hoops from close range made it 58-45. Marian made a brief run at Round Lake midway through the quarter. After a bank shot by Ptak gave the Panthers an 11- point bulge with four minutes to play, Marian went to work. A STEVENS free throw brought the Hurricanes to within 10 at 62-52. Marian appeared to have a legimate chance of winning when Tom Will's three- point play made it 62-55 with 3:13 fir But Round Lake's Keske then came up with a crucial steal, erasing Marian's chance to trim the margin to five. A scramble under Marian's basket resulted in Ptak being sent to the free- throw line. He made the first, giving Round Lake some breathing room at 63-55. The Panthers then scored three straight points to increase their lead to 66-55 with less than two minutes to play. Round Lake's defensive strategy going into the game was to stop Andy Hartlieb and Will. The two players combined for 57 points in Marian Central's 72-70 win over Round Lake at Hampshire's Northern Illinois Classic tournament. "WE WORKED consistently to try to deny the ball to Will and Hartlieb," Ward said. The strategy worked on Andy Hartlieb, as he was held to six points after scoring 35 in Marian Central's earlier win over the Panthers. Will scored 13, but was held to six through the first three quarters. Hie Hurricanes were coming into the game looking for their third straight NWSC win and to erase memories of a shellacking at the hands of Harvard earlier in the week. But the way this one started, it looked like the Hurricanes it be in for another long The Panthers made six of their first 10 shots to race to a 12- 0 lead. Marian committed five turnovers and missed two shots in its first seven possessions. The Hurricanes did not get on the scoreboard until a Bill Hartmann hoop with 3:50 left in the quarter. "We came out with a different lok offensively with a com bination of zones and man-to- man," Ward said. THE HURRICANES slowly but surely recovered. After trailing 14-4, the MC outscored Round Lake 8-2 to get back in the game. Round Lake led 16-12 after eight minutes. The Pan thers missed their last 10 shots in the quarter. After Round Lake opened its lead to eight by making six of its first eight second-quarter shots, Marian rallied. Free throws by n Stevens and Brian Truckenbrod and an outside jumper from Truckenbrod brought the Hurricanes to within three at 28- 25. Andy Hartlieb's 10-footer and a tip-in gave the Hurricanes their first and only lead in the game at 29-28 with 55 seconds left. Round Lake, which had not scored since the four-minute mark, finished the quarter on a hoop from Horn for a one-point lead at halftime. But heavyweight Bob Bentz put all worries to rest, as he recorded a : 32 pin to give Johnsburg its win. The triumph propelled the Skyhawks to 5-1 in the NWSC, tied with Round Lake for second place behind league-leader Grant (6-0*. "WE REALLY did poorly against Grayslake, but our kids really met adversity head-on with their performance Saturday. It was only 16 hours later, but we wrestled as well as we have all year," Roberts said. Against Fox Valley Conference r e p r e s e n t a t i v e C e n t r a l , Johnsburg took forfeit victories at 98 and 105, and never lodked back, rolling to an easy win. Eifler (1:37), Walker (:39) and Thorn (1:32) collected pins in suc cession for JHS. Hauck tied 2-2, Dumelle claimed a 9-4 decision, and Bentz collected a : 23 pin. The Hononegah battle was mj of the same. Forfeit preceded pins By EI Walker (: 21). SHAUN KEE (138) won by a 10-7 count, and Hauck recorded a pin in 4:52. Jeff Carden and Dumelle captured forfeits, before Pat Bjer- ning (185) pinned in 1:02. "Our guys really got hungry. They really responded. They all wrestled their hearts out, and nobody let us down," said Roberts, whose Skyhawks are now an impressive 12-6 on the year. But the most impressive per formance .. of all came from Walker, who extended his amaz ing winning streak. Walker has not lost a match since Dec. 14, and has dropped only three all season.; both times. "Against Hononegah, Jim Walker had the kid on his back in one second. He had both guys (from CLC and Hononegah) on their backs in five seconds. He is just wrestling so great. Just outstanding," praised Roberts. THE JOHNSBURG sophomores tied Grayslake 29-29, and the JV Skyhawks whipped CLC 34-25, and Hononegah 43-9. "What a successful weekend we* had," Roberts gushed. "1 Just couldn't be happier. We made such a marked improvement from Friday to Saturday, it was unbelievable." which t^ helfidla second place in the conference. "That's a big match for us," ad mitted Roberts. "It will decide who will be second going into the conference tournament (Feb. 2 at Round Lake). It's also our last dual of the season." Mike Roberts only hopes it's one-third as successful as this past weekend was.
