JA!NL ARY 23.1983 Sports Chris Imwik Editor Spirts Needed: a place for Landry's hat This, that and the other thing from the messy desk of your friendly neighborhood sports columnist: • Talk about outsmarting yourself. After vowing not to read any pre-game Super Bowl hype, I nearly missed watching the fiasco because 1 didn't know what time it started. • Admittedly, it was discouraging and upsetting to see McHenry's boys' basketball team lose all those close games earlier this season. But it's worse -- much worse -- to watch them forfeit, in wake of the strike. What I'd give for one of those one-point losses now. • Favorite words to use in place of 'beat' in a sports story: crush, wallop, pummel, pound, lash, rip, tip, top, nip, edge, breeze (by), down, stymie, drop, stun, slam, cruise (past), slip (by), rout, deflate, topple, shred, batter, upset, ground, shock, roll (over), outduel, best, squeak (by), and of course, the ever- popular, kill. It's a violent world we live in. Any other sugges tions can be sent to: Sports Synonyms, 3S12 W. Elm St., McHenry, 60050. • Surprisingly, it appeared that quite a few McHenry High fans, in limbo because of the lack of MCHS athletic contests, trekked to Johnsburg Friday night to see the JHS-Grayslake game, in lieu of watching back-to-back thrills on 'Dallas' and 'Falcon Crest.'Interesting. - • Former Jacobs High standout Tom Schaefer's transfer from the University of Illinois has certainly raised some eyebrows. As if U of I officials weren't already walking on thin ice because of NCAA investigations, and Bobby (oops, it's Bob, isn't it?) Knight's allegations. One can't help but wonder about the state of U of I athletics, and when a fine player like Schaefer leaves, it's bound to lead to more questions. • What is the nutritional value of a pack of an'm It m's?' And what is one single unit called? An'm' or an'm & m?' If the ar bitrator in the District 156 teacher's strike isn't too busy, perhaps he could lend a hand in this argument. • If you haven't seen Jacobs' Mark Slimko show his wares on the basketball court yet, fear not, and mark Feb. 16 off on your calendar. Jacobs has already played -- and beaten -- McHenry at Buckner Gym, but the Golden Eagles will travel to Johnsburg for a non-conference battle on that date. He's Worth the price of admission. Plus. • How can a pass be partially deflected, as one of the ABC Einsteins claimed during the Super Bore? It's either deflected, or it isn't. Isn't it? • ABC's coverage of the yawner was below par. The folks at ABC threw too much at you at once, and none of it mattered. After Miami's Reggie Roby had hit three lousy punts, the an nouncers talked about his failures, but didn't give Roby's average. The graphic instead showed Roby's yardage per punt * in the previous two post-season games. Who cares? What's his average today. feUaa. today. • Tom Landry's analyses of big plays were lacking as well. And why was his hat on top of the TV monitor? No hat racks in Palo Alto?r • With the 49ers' Super Blow-out, does this mean the Bears are in the running for the second-best team in paid football? • Names of athletes are often more fun than the games themselves. Isn't it strange how some monikers don't sound right on anybody except their rightful owner? There's Carlton Fisk. Try calling him Carl Fisk. Doesn't work. Or Danny White. You wouldn't call him Dan White. Or Michael Jordan. Would he be as good a player if his name was simply Mike Jordan? • Does weather such as the kind we suffered through last weekend serve any purpose? • Jordan (Michael) is undoubtedly the single most entertain ing commodity in all of paid sports. He can do more with a basketball than my wife can with a credit card. • Still contemplating the'm & m' question? Don't fret. You're not alone. - * • My first Johnsburg Oldtimers Banquet was, quite simply, a delight. And if all those in attendance aren't totally ready for spring training to commence, well, it's their owo fault. Full coverage of the banquet will come in Friday's edition. • Best lines of thp night came, arguably, from former Sox great Minnie Minoso, who, in discussing his age, said in his perfect blend of Spanish and broken English: "I'm not too old -- I was just born a little too early." He's a gem. : A new look ... Aggressive Sky hawks topple Gray slake in OT, 50-48 By Chris Juzwik PifclndMter-Herald sporU wlltor JOHNSBURG - It was a dif ferent Johnsburg boys' basketball team which took the floor for its Friday night game against Grayslake. It wasn't the Skyhawks of miss ed opportunities, poor shooting and sluggish defense. This was a group of hard-nosed, determined, scrappy fighters, and in the end, it all paid off with a thrilling 50-48 overtime Northwest Suburban Conference triumph over the Rams. "I'll tell ya, that was a great win," said an elated JHS coach Ben Beck after the game. "We were so aggressive, and that all starts in practice. Defensively, it was our best ballgame all year," Beck added. Overall, it had to be the Skyhawks' most sound per formance yet, in a game which featured more official's whistles than you'd want to hear in a lifetime, as the two teams were called for a whopping 53 total fouls. But there was a winner, and a team more due for a victory would have been tough to find. Johnsburg iced the win when guard Jeff Nichols canned two free throws with 14 seconds left for the only points in the overtime period. Three Grayslake attempts misfired in the final seconds, and the Skyhawks raised their con ference record to 2-4, 6-9 overall. Grayslake is 4-2,7-8. THE SKYHAWKS, who led by as much as 12 points late in the third quarter, watched their lead slowly evaporate, as the Rams showed why they are the NWSC's second-place team. JHS led 36-26 after three on a jumper at the horn by junior Bill Dust. But Grayslake -- led by guard Brian Garrity, who tallied 10 points in the fourth period -- pecked away at the lead. Grayslake finally closed to within two at 44-42 with 2:53 left in regulation, as 6-7 center Gary Link bottomed out a jump hook from the lane. Two free throws by guard Tom Walsh pushed JHS back ahead by fqjr. With 1:09 left, Kevin Andre scored a bucket to cut the gap to 46-44. Nichols hit one of two free throws for JHS, but Link tallied to make it 47-46 with 30 seconds left. Johnsburg reserve center Tim Shine, who had 11 points in the game -- all in the second half -- hit one of two charity tosses to up the JHS lead to 48-46. But the om nipresent Link stuck a jump shot from 12 feet out with 11 seconds left to tie the contest. JOHNSBURG CALLED timeout to set up the potentially game- winning basket. But it wasn't to be. "We wanted Nichols to take the** shot," Beck explained, "but Grayslake overplays so much, he couldn't get the ball, they took that away from us. So we had to find the open man, and we did." • i Indeed, they did. A wide-open Frank Husak received the pass from Walsh on the right wing. The Skyhawks barely edged Northwest Suburban Conference rival Grayslake on the road Fri day night, 34-30, and then, follow ing a tongue-lashing by Roberts, tripped Crystal Lake Central 40-15 and Hononegah 51-12 in a double dual at Central Saturday. "We didn't wrestle well against Grayslake at all," Roberts said. "I was real discouraged with our performance, and I was very cautious going into Saturday. We had a meeting Friday night and Saturday morning, and the our kids responded so well. We couldn't have wrestled any better than we did Saturday." WINNERS FOR JHS Friday against the Rams included Ed Klein (112), who recorded a pin in 3:43. Jim Walker (126) started off a fabulous personal weekend by pin ning his opponent in 2:56. David Thorn (132) tied 7-7, and Brian Hauck (145) claimed a 6-0 washout.
