Although participation in the program is voluntary, nearly all Illinois top students elect , to have test scores and high class rank sent to ISSC for consideration. Among the finalists in the high school competition were Andrea Navarroli, a junior at McHenry East Campus, and Pamela Hoge, a freshman at West Campus. In the junior high school competition, Matt Lavin, of Johnsburg Junior High, reached the finals. It is estimated that $100,000 will be earned through the spelling competition to benefit MS research and services.
