High school principal Rob GOugh at first thought that the fuses blew because of a power surge, but Com monwealth Edison reported that no surge occurred either before or after the power outage over the weekend. Edison employees reportedly conjectured mat the pumps may have frozen on the roof during the power outage and then when the electricity came back on, the frozen pumps could not work and caused the fuses to break. The board commended Gough and the maintenance crews of the various schools for their dedication in keeping the schools open in spite of the cold weather. The program offers educational opportunities to children of migrant workers in the McHenry County area during the summer months. Johnsburg has in the past been the administrative district for As was stated previously/ the Board of Education and Superintendent, Its spokesperson, feel that a 4.2% raise on the base salary If ' fair and reasonable" for the teachers considering the "current inflationary rate." If the current rate of Inflation is to be the sole basis for' teachers raises, then the McHenry High School Teachers ask: "Where were the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools when tlmei were hard and the cost of living was high? Where were they when teachers bit the bullet by taking low raises and assuming half the cost of health insur ance benefits to help out the district and the community?*' It appears that the teachers In McHenry High School are locked Into a no-win situation: sacrifice when the cost of living is high and settle for so mething low when the cost of living drops. Teachers are now asking for their health insurance to be Reinstated and not have It treated or qouted as being^ part of an inflated percentage raise we are receiving. The Board did not count health insurance costs as part of administrative raises, yet they insist on including it in reporting teacher raises. We were also shocked to discover that ten of the district's thirteen ad ministrators have been rewarded, during these "hard times", with life in surance benefits double the amount of their salaries where as teachers receive benefits equal only to their respective salaries. It not only appears that we are In a no-win situation In regards to the cost of living and insurance benefits, but also that there is a substantial double standard being utilized J>y the Board in rewarding other em ployees of this district. We absolutley are not asking for the same percentage increase as the administrators received. In light of the more than one million dollar surp lus Mr. Neuman acknowledges, we are merely asking the Board and the Superintendent to reevaluate their position as to what is truly "fair and reasonable." - Why is there such a low opinion of the worth and value of our teachers In the eyes of Mr. Swartzloff and the Board of Education?? Mr. Neuman has maintained that he has the financial Interests of the district to consider. We can only concur that he and the rest of the Board have done a remarkable job along these lines. We, feel, however, that he and the Board have overlooked, and are continuing to overlook, what should be vital concertos ormi^ly-flected Board of Education: reward ing teachers for their significant cbfit^lbutlon«?fo DVstrtet ViV56.
