Mi JJr Freund, Hill, Dunne lead BydvlsMffik the tystal Lake Central's Jeff Aldridge seeks an opening as McHenry's Joe Tonyan applies pressure during the Warrior win This columnist in for a Knight-mare Hi. My name is Skip and I'm 12 years old. Chris, my neighbor, Is busy. Said he's studying individual defensive statistics, for Ivy League lacrosse players during the modern era, so I'm sitting in for him today. Being just 12, my basketball career is obviously far ahead of me. I've got solid ballhandling skills, and can hit the open jumper. I can play some tight man-to-man defense, and I'll hit nine out of every ten free throws I shoot. Basically, I'm your prototype point guard, but as I said, there's still some time for me to develop. - Although I'm not in high school yet, it's not weird for me to think about playing college ball If I had to pick right now, I'd like to go to a DePaul or a Louisville or a Nevada-Las Vegas, you know, teams that can really motor up and down the floor. Chris says I'm crazy. We had a conversation concerning just this subject recently, and as usual, I was on the defensive. It wjent something like this: "Okay, granted, he's not going to win the Nobel Prize for decen cy. But you don't see Steve Alford and Mike Giomi shedding tears over their respective hassles with him, do you? They've taken their punishments like men, and they'll be better for it, too. Knight sets rules. You either follow them, or you don't. If you don't, you pay. It's simple." ' Simple for you maybe. Why would anyone want to go through the hassle of it all? Did I tell you he was a jerk? I think he's dribbl ed the basketball of life one too many times. Look at all the people who paid money to see the Illinois-Indiana game, and got ripped off. What about that, Mr. Smart Guy? "That's really too bad about those folks, but that's not what's important, really. Do you think Bob Knight cares if Herman in Ai sle 4, Row 18, Seat AA enjoys the game? Nope. Knight couldn't care less if anyone even showed up. His job isn't entertainment. His job is to help his athletes get an education, and to win some basketball games along the way. And those are his two major priorities. Can you argue with that? Yeah, but Alford's getting 19 a game, wasted him on the pines against Illinois getting 10 a game, and they wasted him, just & "So Skip, any more thoughts about where you might matriculate?" You mean play college basketball? Well, still looking at UNLV or DePSiil.Louisvffle maybe." "Excuse me Skip, but 1 thought you said you were a superb ballhandler, with a nice soft shot and good defensive skills. And you want to waste that type of talent at one of those places? " Well, I... uh... "Skippy, I'm telling you as a friend, doing you an enormous favor for which you will undoubtedly be eternally indebted to me. You've got to go to Indiana and play for Bob Knight." Oh no. No way. I'm not gonna get caught dead there with that maniac. I wanna play, not sit and watch other clowns get embar rassed on national TV. 'But Skippy, look how much you'll learn. Bob Knight is one of the foremost basketball teachers in the world, now and ever. You might not agree with him, but everything he does has a purpose." • He's a jerk. What purpose did It serve to bench all his good players against Illinois? He's just a big jerk. "Immaterial, my friend. What's one game? Young Mr. Alford will get over it. He already nas. The only people who are really angry are those who bet money on Indiana and got taken to the cleaners. Everybody is up in arms because their HoosierS lost a game they could have won. Don't you think Knight wants to win too? The Hoosiers will come back, make the tournament, and *11 will be forgotten." Not by me. 'Cause I'm not goln' to Indiana. Ever. If 1 ever play against Bob Knight's team, I'm gonna go crazy, and score ana run like a wild man. "See, Skip. That's why you're 12 years old. Irrational. You need • some guidance, a Bob Knight figure, if you will. Maybef COttld be the Bob Knight of your formative years, sort of steer you in the right direction, be a mentor." Oh no you don't. I don't need that type of help. You can just forget about... "Skip, let's go down to the gym, buddy. You can play some defense for an hour, and then we'll let you rebound for an hour, and then maybe shoot free throws for an hour, run some sprints perhaps." But what about jumpers. 1 want to shoot some bombs, some... "Skip, this is what's best for you, I am your own, personal Bob Knight. Now tuck your shirt in." Why is it you always get the last word in these talks? \ "I don't think that's true. I'm doing what's best for you. Your best interests are at hand. Trust me. Straighten up." Uh-oh. I get the feeling this is how Alford got started. shouldn' Buckneri • After a two-week layoff, the Warriors a vengeaMf'&MtWi Crystal Lake Central, Valley's second-place te and settinfwhat Coach Ken Lid- wig hopes IS a precedent for the season's secoodhalf. .Va:. CENTRAL WAS third Fox Valley Conference i of the year, and turned in its sluggish performance in a row, falling to M in the FVC, 11-7 overall. McHenry Is 2-5,6-14, with three FVC contest this week, against CL South, Jacobs and Cary-Grove. CLC tallied 24 points in the game's fourth quarter to make the final score respectable, but tile uSf^McHenry defense throttled Central throughout. McHenry, meanwhile, got solid senior leadership and strong free throw shooting down the stretch to record the impressive "We did^ the things we to to wta^a plained/^Ou three week* has just now playing well. But McHenry guard Scott Freund started a personal scoring spree Which began in the period's last two minutes, an outburst which gave the Warriors breathing room they wouldn't give up. Freund, a 6-foot senior, canned two short jumpers to close out the McHenry scoring in the first quarter; and then began the se cond stanza where he had left off in the first. Freund bagged four straight jumpers from various and sundry spots on the court to, open up a 20-12 Warrior lead they would never lose. It added up to 12 straight points for Freund. He would get only one more for the game, but he had done his part. "They did get it inside on us," Kay said, "but we invite that because with our height, we think we can block some shots and force them to shoot over us. Theirget- ting it Inside didn't hurt us. Freufid*s 12 points in the first half Is what hurt us." LUDW1G SAID the Warriors wanted to get the ban inside, to senior forward Pat Dunne, especially.
