FEBRUARY 6,1915 School * New club promotes citizenship at school Catholic school week is celebrated in the county • The seventh and eighth grade students of Harrison Elemen­ tary School in Wonder Lake have formed a Junior American Citizens Club. ; The club is sponsored by the Kishwaukee Trail Chapter of the Woodstock Daughters of the American Revolution. [The J AC program teaches students the principles of American government, American sentiment and all that goes toward making them good citizens. The club stresses Community activities, projects, patriotic programs and civic duties. \ Asa newly-organized club, the garrison eighth graders took ^Blackjacks" as their section 4ame in honor of Gen. John J. TBlackjack" Pershing. The Seventh graders took "Reed's gangers" a takeoff of the French and Indian War's is the club's ad­ visor and also sponsor of the student historian program for the last seven years. During that time, Harrison School has hosted two regional history fairs and h has won four first place trophies at the state level of competition. Recently, the students wrote letters to World War veterans, compiled an atlas of the key battles of World War n and collected food items for the needy in the Wonder Lake area. In February, the JAC club will take part in the DAR Revolution Award Day at the Woodstock Opera House.» Since the late fall, the students have been working on individual projects for the JAC annual history contest. This is Catholic Schools Week, Feb. 3-9, and McHenry County Catholic Schools have a number of events planned in celebration. In McHenry, Montini Schools start their schedule by presenting information in the parish bulletins outlining the educational environment at the schools. On Feb. 3, the parents association is sponsored a spaghetti dinner that was held at St. Patrick's Church hall. The week included an open house on Monday .and Tuesday mornings to which parents and the community were invited. A "Teacher Appreciation Day" is scheduled for Friday.; All week the students par­ ticipated in an alms-giving :t to help starving people At St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Johnsburg, the week began with a Mass prepared. by the faculty and students at the school and an open house. Other celebrations include an essay and poster and button contest, parental visits and a student appreciation day. Mens workshop slated for Feb. 16 educator, a psychologist and counselor will lead the discussion in the MCC lounge. With the primary goals of reducing stress, communicating feelings and illustrating the importance of touch, a breakfast workshop for men has been slated for Saturday, Feb. 16. The workshop from 8:30 a.m. Mc will be held to noon at IcHenry County College. A clinical social wqnce and Registration must be done in person twFeb. 12 and there is a $10 fee. the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
