FEBRUARY 13.19«5 Gardens should survive winter fairly well Now that we're into February, thoughts are beginning to be directed toward the return of spring activity in yards and gardens. Last winter was detrimental to many landscape plants-what can be expected this year? Even though there's been some bitterly cold temperatures in the past month, most land­ scape plantings should survive better than last winter. This is because we haven't had the wide extremes that occured last winter, when unseasonably warm temperatures alternated with record cold spells, severly injuring or killing many trees and shrubs. So far, this winter has stayed uniformly cold, (except for the thaw around Christmas) which isn't as rough on woody plants, except for those which are not hardy this far north. Since the first of the year, McHenry County has had a good snow cover, which has ad­ vantages and disadvantages for various landscape plantings. Snow is an excellent natural insulator, which is beneficial in protecting perennial flowers, spring bulbs, strawberries, and root systems of all woody plants from extremely low tem­ peratures and deep penetrating frosts. The problem with a good snow cover and shallow frost depth is that it . favors insects overewintering in the soil. Many insect pests, particularly those of vegetable crops, overwinter in crop residues mixed in with the soil, thus are protected by the insulating snow. This could mean high insect problems next season. Another potential problem for landscape plants is damage due to the weight of accumulating snow. Since there hasn't been a thaw after the new year's snowstorm, various smaller shrubs that were weighted down are still in that condition. Depending on the type and in­ dividual situation, some damage to branches may occur. Un­ fortunately, little can be done until things warm up. Carefully brush off new snow as it falls. Finally, cold temperatures and deep snow has been tough on wildlife. Many reports con­ cerning rabbit and deer damagfe to woody plants have been reported from around the McHenry County area. Little can be done now except to possibly move deep snow away from plants that had already been wrapped, or to wrap plants higher to offer more protection.
