This is nothing new Videos from groups like the Clash have always been openly leftist, and Bil­ ly Joel's "Goodbye Saigon" made more impact than most documentaries. One problem with- mix­ ing politics with videos is that often the, political message is confused with a fashion statement. In Cul­ ture Club's "War Song." Boy George seems worried about what he would wear in a war. The video shows us that beautiful people can look good in military garb from either side. Other clips are too nebu­ lous about their political message. In "If I Had a Rocket Launcher." we see Bruce Cockbum surround­ ed by frightening imagery. But all we can get out of the video is that he's angry Angry at who? And why? One of the best new political videos is "Five Minutes" from Bonzo Goes to Washington, the musical collaboration between Bootsy Collins and Jerry Harrison The duo added a rhythmic background to a voice-over of President Kragan's joke about bomb­ ing Russia. The video mixes an assortment of old atomic bomb-related footage culled from the film "The Atomic Cafe" with news footage of Reagan. The eerie juxtapositions in "Five Minutes" are much harder \o dismiss than the overtly stronger message in the slick Frankie Goes to Hollywood clip "Two Tribes." This video has Reagan and Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko look-alikes fighting ij out in a ring. Music on TV this week On Sunday. Feb 17. MTV will show an hourlong spe­ cial on former Styx mem­ ber Tommy Shaw. It includes interviews with Shaw and backstage footage On Sunday. Feb. 24. MTV will show "The Firm" with Jimmy Page, recorded live in London last December. "Night Flight" will pres­ ent The Clash film "Rude Boy" on the USA Network in two parts Friday, Feb 22. and Saturday.
