FEBRUARY 20.19B5 (Continued from page 1) By Robert Gordon PlatodMter Herald staff wrft*r Every parent knows that caring for one newborn infant can be a fulltime job. But wheh that responsibility is multiplied by four, it is time to call out the [that is just what McHenry couple Dan and Laura Koleno did after the boy or girl they originally expected arrived as two boys and two girls more than six weeks ago. In order to feed the quadruplets'" open, crying mouths and keep up with the fidgety four's schedule, the Kolenos have more than 40 volunteers working weekdays in shifts virtually around the clock. Most of the volunteers are relatives or members of the Koleno's church, Resurrection Catholic Church in Woodstock. The couple has a weekly chart set up near their telephone, indicating which of the volun teers work each shift. Those contributing their time either help care for the babies, cook or clean the house. "They've (the church members) been planning this as long as we've known that Laura was pregnant," Dan said. "I doirt know exactly why (I volunteered)," said church member and good friend Bobbie Genovese, who works the noon to three shift. "Just because there is a need. When there was a call for help, everybody responded well." The 40-volunteer rotation is not a permanent situation, but instead a temporary routine the Kolenos are following until the babies are older and Laura is back to 100 percent. "I'm still tired for parts of the day, but I'm feeling pretty good for the most part," Laura said. "I'm su; a difficult bears and balloons, and two of them resting in white wicker cradles.* "They don't look anything alike," Laura said. "They are four different looking babies." "We ioke around and talk about when they leant to crawl, they're going to crawl in four different directions," she said. The Kolenos are quick to point out that each baby is growing and progressing at different and already showing fferent personality traits. Tliey said Robert is "alert, active and inquisitive." Holly is 'very passive"; Joshua is to be napping during the day," Laura said. "But who's got the time?" Two volunteers are present from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. In addition, a nurse, provided free by Loyola Hospital until March, works at the nome from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. "We're hoping by the time they are two months old, the babies won't need help throughout the night," Laura said. Full baby bottles fill hallof the top shelf of the Koleno's refrigerator, along with a bulk of baby food and formula. Diapers are provided free by Northern Illinois Medical Center, and are truly ap preciated by the coiq>le since each baby goes through 12 of them a day. In response to a question from Aid. Ray Smith (3rd), City Attorney Bernard Narusis said there was no way this council could bind a future one by a yote taken Monday night. The motion failed 2-4. Voting in favor were McClatchey ana Snell. Voting against were Bolger, Nolan, Smith and Serntella. Busse and Datz were absent. Smith and Serritella felt the motion, at this time, was meaningless and could not support it. Snell commented that he just wanted to keep the issue alive and voted for it. Poper also presented for trustees' study copies of a draft revamping the first eight chapters of village ordinances. Plans to purchase snow fencing for next year to alleviate drifting along Lake Shore Drive were discussed. Trustee Raymond Embrey expressed concern over possible road damage due to poor drainage of melting snow as spring arrives. The consensus was little could be done to ad dress the problem now. However, all are loved equally. \ "I think you're favorite is whichever one you're holding at the time,'* Laura said. "They all have such different per sonalities, there's no way you can pick a favorite." Although the Koleno quads are the first ever to be born in the Perinatal Center at the Loyola medical complex, multiple births are not unique to either Dan's or Laura's family. Dan has two brothers who are twins and his sister gave birth to twins. In addition. Laura's grandmother had twins. However, in Laura's case a fertility drug known to cause multiple births probably was partly responsible for the quadruplets. "I was overwhelmed, and I said, 'We only ordered one," said Alice Kadney, Laura's mother. "But they're all beautifiil. It's just a challenge." ST.
