Bennett, who is deputy chief of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, was referring to Northern Illinois Medical Center, where indeed there is that possibility. At about 7:30 p.m. Monday night, the normal daily routine of NIMC was disrupted for about an hour as firefighters from McHenry Township Fire Department held a drill. Bennett said the drill situation was of a fire in the mechanical area on the hospital's third floor. The practice session was designed to test the fire phone system, which was put in precisely for such an emergency and allows communications between hospital floors. The drill also tested the elevator and fire alarm systems. In the event of fire, firemen who have special keys can call the elevator to any given floor regardless of buttons pushed on another "We wanted to make sure all the keys to the doors and elevators worked," Bennett said. At one point in the drill, a firemen "went down" and had to be extricated from a third floor stairwell. Using a special wire basket (a Stokes basket), the injured fireman was taken onto the roof where the aerial platform took him to ground level. Bennett said the drill went well with all the hospital facilities performing as expected. "The drill was essentially a pre-plan. Everything performed as anticipated and there were no problems. We received excellent cooperation from the hospital," Bennett said. "Of course, we hope we'll never have to go there for real."
