Finding refund forms can be difficult By Jane Fuller Dear June-Now that I read your column, I can see the possibilities of saving money with manufacturers refund offers. But it seems to me that the hard work is finding the required refund forms. I thought my local food stores would not have any refund forms, so I went to a town with a population of more than 100,000 to do my supermarket shopping. Was I surprised when I couldn't find any. I found more forms when I checked with my local grocer, • and my town's population is only 4,400. Coupon Clipper Do you have any tips on fin ding refund forms? --S.N., Illinois. Dear S.N.-Finding refund forms often depends more on the thoughtfulness of your local grocer than on the size of the town you live in. Pads of refund forms frequently come packed with the merchandise. Some grocers throw these money- saving forms away. What a grocer know how much we value the opportunity to turn box tops and labels into cash. The best way for a store to display refund forms is to attach the pads to the shelves right under the matching products. Where this method is not used, many stores have set up bulletin boards that display all kinds of manufacturer offers. If you don't see refund forms displayed in a food store, by all means ask about them. Let the store manager know you ap preciate being given these money-saving opportunities. When you do come across refund forms on display, please be considerate. Only take one for yourself and one to trade with a friend. Do you belong to an organization that needs some extra income? If so, here is an interesting tip from Lorri Ar nold of Colorado Springs, Colo.: "To increase our club's treasury, we asked all our members to clip coupons for a few weeks and then bring all those they didn't want to our monthly meeting. At the meeting, we spread the coupons out on a large table and mem bers paid a penny a piece for each one they wanted. It was a lot of fun, and we all saved money, not to mention fatening our club treasury." If your organization has found an intresting way to raise money with coupons or refunds, I would appreciate hearing about it. Severe flooding problems not anticipated: ESDA By Mark Baus PUIndeater Herald Newt Service Flood waters receded and residents in some parts of the state returned home to mop up after unseasonably warm temperatures melted snow and frozen rivers in Illinois over the weekend. Few problems were reported in McHenry County, despite the melting snow, with only a few requests for minor sandbagging along area rivers, creeks and tributaries, according to Barry Valentine, weather coordinator for the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA). Valentine reported that monitors at various points along the Fox River have indicated that the river will crest "near flood stage" this week but Valentine doesn't expect any problems. "Reports from our monitoring stations in Wilmot, Wis., McHenry and Algonquin show that there have been few Nasir J. Ahmad, M.D. and Sameeh J. McHENRY FS Marengo McHenry Elkhorn Woodstock Zenda Huntley Chemung COOPERATIVE SPIRIT LEADING THE WAY problems. There was a home along a tributary of the Kish- waukee River north of Union that looked like it would be in trouble if the water got any higher, but I think they are out of danger," Valentine said. The ESDA staff has been concerned about flooding problems because of the large amount of rain that saturated the ground last fall. Valentine said the concern is that the ground will not be able to absorb all the water from the melting snow. "While most of the snow is gone except for large snow banks, that couldabe a problem, depending on the amount of rainfall we get. We were lucky this weekend because we got only about three-quarters of an inclv of rain," Valentine said. Valentine said the ESDA office receives periodic river reports from their monitoring stations so they are able to anticipate possible flooding problems. ES1EEII CLASSIC ADVENTURES.
