Green St., Our annual card comes from Betty and Dan O'Shea, the Irish Globetrotters. This one comes from Phoenix and they refrain from men tioning the temperature. Their daughter, Shelia Aleckson of McHenry, sent them the clipping of the Irish Prairie review. Come June the O'Sheas will be in Ireland to check on the Walsh and Gibbs clans. Hope they say hello to my cousins. February 12,1985 Dear Earl: The 16th McHenry Day in Florida will be held at Anderson Park, Tarpon Springs. Florida in Shelter No. 7 on March 30. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everybody attending should provide their own lunch and a grill will be ready for bar becuing if desired. Anderson Park is located on Highway 19 at Tarpon Springs and it is the same place that the original McHenry Day was held. Everybody visiting in the area (from McHenry) is cordially invited. A large attendance is expected. Bill and Pauline Pries P.S. Would appreciate this little invite being published in the SIH column. Thanks a lot. Glad to mention McHenry Day. This column has carried notices and reports of the event for many years. A large number of McHenryites have sand in their shoes. We will soon be reading glowing reports from the baseball training camps. My big wish is that the season won't open until all agreements between owners and the players association are signed and sealed. Fans don't want strikes. A card came from Arnold Rauen, who is way out in Palm Springs, California organizing a new chapter of the St. Joseph The Worker movement. He adds that even some Irish are joining. (Quite a story if you want to believe it). In the same mail came the first St. Patrick's Day card of 1985. The note read: "Just trying to make spring come around! Happy St. Paddy's Day. From that 'English' girl at the Plaindealer." Carole Must admit I haven't been too well lately, but a letter from a funeral home shook me. It wasn't what I thought. The letter carried this wish, "Hope you are on your way to complete recovery." That was consoling. 'Twas all in fun and signed-- Your loving readers, Dan Justen and Verne Sund After looking forward to the 17th of March for many moons, I'm afraid my celebration will be limited this year. Better days are coming. Since I have been unable to get out where I pick up bits of news, it is nice to get mail. It helps to put a column together. Shocking to say the least. The Sunday Trib came out with a long story about Cub pitchers using the spitball. Old Timers would laugh. I saw Jess Davidson, imported pitcher for a McHenry team, chewing slippery Elm to get saliva enough to wet the ball real good. It actually splashed into the catchers mitt. It was legal in those days. Those were the days when baseball games were played in the Driving Park at the south end of Center Street. The area later became Wattles Sub division. March first is the traditional moving day. Farm leases ex pired on that day. Maybe they still do. Farmers had a getting ready to differed farm, pitched in to help. big job of move to a Neighbors If you ever lived on a farm, you know that each cow has her own station and will move right to it when let in the barn from the pasture or cow yard. Moving to a new location was confusing for the transplanted bossies. I'm not getting into the ad vertising departments business, but anybody who has suffered from such torture as pinched nerves has a chance of getting relief. Of course, this has to be prescribed by a doctor. All I can do is vouch for the effectiveness in my case. The first'3'thing I will do when I get out of the cabin will be to get a haircut. Laugh if you want to. Call this another "Cooped Up" column and we will send it to our editor. TAKK A TRIP TO PARADISIt HAWAII *499 6 DAYS/5 NIGHTS »AIR& HOTEL 5 DAYS OF FUN & SUN ON LOVELY.
