"Our main interest is making the world safe and trying to do all we can to stop nuclear war," says Nancy Bartoline of Woodstock, one of the founders of the three-month-old ' group. The coalition was formed in December by Bartoline, Jackie Kaufman of Wonder Lake and Ann Metcalf. The idea was topool the resources of a number of smaller groups and individuals to work on general peace-oriented issues, Bartoline explained. / Membership apparently is growing steadily. At the MCPC's first meeting in December, 25 people attended: That number is now up to 40, with some people acting as representatives for similar groups. The next meeting of the coalition will be tonight at Resurrection Center, 2710 Country Club Road, Woodstock. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The peace coalition is also particpating in what will probably be one of the more unusual.pleas to bait the - What I cannot to bear to think of as lost forever in a nuclear war." On Aug. 4, the panels from all over the country, stitched into a giant "peace ribbon," will be wrapped around the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The date of the ceremony was not chosen arbitrarily - it marks the 40th anniversary of the atomic-bomb blast that leveled Hiroshima. Hie group is also active in setting the symbolic "Nuclear- Free Zones," areas in which nuclear or military activity that could provoke a war is banned. Bartoline said people that speak out against peace groups as dangerous to America's defense "speak out of ignorance and maybe out of fear, too. Part of what we want to do is educational programs." One group that may directly benefit from tne coalition's work is children, Bartoline said. She explained that the fear of nuclear annihilation is beginning to create stress in young people. "We give our own children a feeling of security, to see us working in positive ways," Bartoline said. It is a major stop-off point along the sandhill crane flyway through the Great Lakes^arM, toH^ir breeding groundsWtKrfflbrllf According to Yvonne Henze and Fran Almquist, leaders of the trip, the best viewing time for the sandhills is just after sunrise and just before sunset (6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central Stan dard Time, approximately). The group plans to assemble in the parking lot for the Crane Viewing Platform at 1 p.m. Participants should check in at the headquarters for a map of the area. The early afternoon will be spent walking to areas where the sandhills feed during the day. The group will wind up the walk at a place where they can view the "flyover" at sunset, when literally thousands will fly overhead, looking for a place to spend the night. Some Auduboners mey choose to return home that evening (a two to three hour trip). Others plan to spend the night either in the Jasper-Pulaski cam- m pgfcftffidft Or in a motel, and be up early for the morning crane exodus. Those who wish to go with the group should contact one of the following people: Craig Miller, (312) 658-2403; Darlene Fiske, (815) 338-0592; or Martha Sauvage^(815) 459-0442. Call the above individuals for in formation on motel ac comodations. No reservations are needea te camp at Jasper- Pulaski. The leaders will be in the campground.
