'Certified City' steering committee chosen The steering committee of the Certified Cities Program has been selected and its first meeting will be 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, at the Northern Illinois Medical Center board room. The Illinois Certified Cities Program is a local economic developement tool. Through the Certified Cities process, com munities can attain certain professionally recognized levels of achievement in areas that are important to overall economic development. In McHenry, the program will be undertaken as a joint venture by the city and the Chamber of Commerce, the two sponsors of the McHenry Area Economic Development Commission, with the Chamber providing the administrative staff and the city providing the clerical support. Fran Olsen, executive director of the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the committee, reported, "It is most gratifying to find the high level of interest in this self-analysis program. Each individual who was asked to participate on this steering committee agreed to do so. Additionally, three individuals volunteered to be members of the group. This level of interest speaks very positively of the general interest in excellence within our community." The program encourages all parts of the community to work together in assessing the community's assets and liabilities and achieving it local goals. It can improve the lines of communication among the city government, the Chamber, civic organizations, the local citizenry, and other involved groups.
