SECTION 2 - PAGE 17 - PLAIN DEALER-HER ALL). FRIDAY. MARCH 29.19«5 Sports Individuality the theme for Marian thinclads WOODSTOCK - For a moment, consider one and one- half inches. In 1984, it was that distance which kept Marian Central's Andy Hartlieb from qualifying in the shot put for the state meet. Hartlieb returns this spring for his final track season for the Hurricanes, and would like nothing better than to erase those ugly thoughts of .1% in ches. "We want to get Andy downstate in the shot put and discus. It (last year's ex perience) should go a long way. He's esperienced in big meets," Marian Central boys track coach Jim Speaker said. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, Hartlieb was about the only kthlete regularly scoring points, keeping MC out of the cellar in 1984. For example, in the McHenry County meet, it was Hartlieb's five points in the shot put that accounted for all of their points. "Andy will carry us well in the shot and discus. We'll go in expecting him to get first most of the time," Speaker said. The numbers dilemma con tinues to haunt the Hurricanes. Lake Geneva Raceway sets for season LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - The Lake Geneva Raceway will begin its 20th season of oval track stock car racing on Saturday, April 13. The facility, which was originally constructed as a drag strip began stock car racing on June 2, 1966. ' The 20th season will be featuring a new hobby stock car class, which will bring auto racing down to an affordable level. ' Along with the new hobby-car division, the late models wjll be back in force. Four-time track champion Roger Otto of Burlington, who captured his fourth title during the final night of racing in the 1984 season, will be returning to defend his iHhM against the best limited late model drivers in Wisconsin. Bob Brownell of Crystal Lake, who finished third in 1984 behind Otto and Jerry Straube, will be challenging Otto for the crown in a new Firebird. Many other returning drivers will be behind the wheels of new cars and going after the championship. Kevin Rein of Woodstock, last season's hobby car champion, has moved up to run against the late models. According to raceway of ficials, improvements are continuing at the raceway to make a night at the races more enjoyable than ever for families and individuals. The team consists of 15 mem bers: six seniors and freshmen, two sophomores and a^unior. That puts the theme on in dividual progress. Preview "That's the main thing," Speaker said. "We don't want people to even think about the team score." Andy Hartlieb will be joined this season by brother Jim. The duo will be hoping to pay the kind of dividends they did on the basketball court. "He's a- diamond in the rough," Speaker said of Jim Hartlieb, a freshman. "We'd like to see him make progress throughout the season." Speaker said Monday he is experimenting with exactly where to put individual runners. The team is currently resting during spring break before the season opener April 3 at Elgin St. Edward. Speaker said he is pleased with sophomore high jumper Dave Niedospial. "He can really get off the ground. He shows a lot of promise," the coach said. The Hurricanes have already been hit with an injury as senior Craig Kunz suffered a sprained ankle. Kunz competed in the sprints and triple jump last year. - Senior Lynn Smith in the triple and long jump is another points possibility for the Hurricanes, Speaker said. Speaker, in his third season as head track coach, predicted Marengo and Lake Zurich as teams tabbed for solid Nor thwest Suburban Conference finishes. INCOME TAX SERVICE ') PAUL A.
