Well, it's about that time, with the Cincinnati Reds holding its traditional opening game tomorrow, one day ahead of the rest of the league, and the golfing pros fighting to wear the winner's green jacket in the Masters Tournament at Augusta on Thursday CBS will bring the action on the Augusta National Golf Club, supplying five-and-a-half hours of air time. This will be the networks's 30th year of Mas­ ters Tournament coverage. But the Masters seems to be the only big tourna­ ment CBS has grabbed for some time, while ABC has been cottoning to golf the way it once threw its arms around boxing. ABC announced back in January that it signed three of golf's four Grand Slam tournaments -- the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the Professional Golfer's Tournament -- to a multi-year agreement that will carry through to the end of the decade. The network has been televising the U.S. Open for 20 years, and in 1977 started covering all 18 holes of the tournament's final day. For the past eight years. ABC has televised the entire 18 holes of the last two days, making it the only network to give fans such complete coverage. The British Open has been televised by ABC since 1962. when it appeared as part of the "ABC's Wide World of Sports." This will be the fifth consec­ utive year in which live coverage of the historic tournament's third and final rounds will be present­ ed.
