But most ol the adoles­ cent traumas of getting a date lor the prom or the latest pair of designer leans pale, when compared to the true story on which this film is based. Rocky is a kid from Southern California who was born with a genetic birth defect. Calcium deposits are accumulating around his skull, enlarging his head, distorting his facial fea­ tures and leaving him horribly disfigured. The doctors continue to give Rocky only a few months to live, but he manages not only to survive, but to thrive. His grades at school are superb, and she has many triends. Rocky even plans to ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle across Europe Much of. if not ad. ol Rocky's ability to deal with his affliction stems from his mother. He has no idea who his father was. but his mother has taught him that he is what he is. and to make the best ol Cher plays this mother in a role that fits her like a pair of the skintight leather pants she wears in the film. She is • no- nonsense lady, ready to spar with doctors, school-board administrators or macho motorcycle suitors. Yet with her son. her jadedness gives way to a warmth and tender­ ness any mom would be proud of. Director Peter Bogdanovtch is making something of a comeback with this Wm, and he is wise to let a moving story ten itself. Eric Stoitz gives an incredibly moving performance as Rocky. It is all the more incredible when one considers that his lacial expressions were limited by the severe makeup. The movie is not flawless? The boy and his mom are part ol a Harley-Davidson motorcy­ cle gang who seem more like boy scouts in black leather We also have no idea what his mom does lor a living, but the story is so powerful, and the performances so affecting, that the final impact is potent.
