Sports SECTION 2 • PAGE 11 - PLA1NPEALER-HERALD. WEDNESDAY. APRIL 10,1965 Marian softball team starts with new attitude By Steve Peterson t y M t l l . M I • riunMuw n«UQnvwioerricf) WOODSTOCK - You •ay there is a contract out on Marian Central girls' softball team. And it's not the lrinri of con tract that usually comes to mind.*. Coach Lisa Billman is hoping her contract system will bring positive results this spring. » "Thirty-four girls signed up MARIAN ~ Preview •I'uiCAxn for softball," Billman said. "1 nut in a 'contract system' of what I expected of thpm, and it dropped to 25. Now we have 12 ldds - but I think we have 12 people and they'll do the "We're a veiy young team.' of the freshmen have never played before. We lost six Seniors and the six have played four years," Billman said. Six freshmen dominate the MC squad. There are two lores, one junior and seniors - one out for the $rst time. t But while inexperience could toe a weakness, the youthfulness and the desire to start is a plus. "I think the attitude is the big thing. We have a motto this Year: 'put the pride back in Marian," the coach said. • Last year, the Hurricanes suffered through a spring in which they won just two of 14 flames.« "A lot of UK kids didn't take it r. By the time they their senior year they 1 competed for four years and le of them were more about college and their lives after high school," Billman said of the season she would like to forpet. Julie Callahan returns to anchor the MC pitching rotation. The junior will l>e MC s number one nurler. She played left field last year and caught during the summer. Beyond Callahan, though, the rotation's spots are up for grabs. "We just started to look at a lot of girls and we'll iust play it by ear," Billman said. Offensively, the Hurricanes bring in some solid hitting credentials. The team's top hitter, Donna Remke, is coming off a .516 average. Remke played third base and may see some action on the mound this year, Billman said. Callahan was MC's second- best hitter in 1964 with a .486 mark. Jill Berna hit at a .400 clip a year ago. Sophomore i be frying to "I think I learned something had to be done in setting them to practice. * Volleyball or basketball does not have the problem, but something must be set up so they will not cut practice," she said. "Defen sively and offensively I learned what will work and wnat will not work." Billman set a goal of a .500 record for 1965, quite an im provement over last year's 2-12. Ann Franklin will better her .444 average as a freshman. Billman instituted a weight- training program this year in hopes of boosting the batting averages. Defense was one of the Hurricanes' big problems last season. "Sometimes I find myself coaching more defense. I really try to stress defense. Tonight we worked on just the mental game. You have to convince them softball is a mental game," Billman explained. Berna will be taking her ex perience to centerfield this year. "She's the strongest arm on the team, but we need her ex perience in center," Billman said of the senior. Her squad's youthfulness has played an important role in just who will play where. Said Billman: "A lot of kids have to learn several different positions." Billman will be heading into her second campaign ana she said a lot was learned in her first. For the first time, there will be both Class A and Class AA tournaments. Up to this season, softball had been one of the few sports still in a one-class tour nament system. "I think it will help. This is something which probably should have been done for a long time," Billman said. Billman picks Grant and Marengo a as the teams to beat in the Northwest Suburban Conference. t7Revco BUDWEISER BEER 12 fl. oz. cor»s*6 pock Get it for less *1.99 ANCIENT ACC BOIIRBON 86 Proof* 1.75 Liter Get it $|f| 4Q lor less B A L SCOTCH Imported 80 Proof*750 ML Get it MQ for less 9mWW RHNNTE WMES Red, White or Rose*750 ML Get it $ for less 1.89 SHASTA 6 Pack*4 Assorted flavors Get it for less 99' HANNAH A HOM BOOR BON 80 Proof*l .75 Liter get it * $ for less 8.19 SEAMAN'S V.«. 80 Proof »750 ML Get it for less *7.99 WMTE VELVET VMM 80 Proof *1.75 Liter Get it for less *6.29 Prices in effect AprH 10-15.
