He follows in the footsteps of big brothers David- ("The Partridge Family"), Shaun ("The Hardy Boys") and Patrick ("Bay City Blues"). The boys' mother. Shir ley Jones also starred on "The Partridge Family." The boys' father, the late Jack Cassidy. was on the sitcom "He & She." Their stepfather, comedian Marty Ingels. appeared on two 1960s sitcoms. "I'm Dick ens -- He's Fenster" and "The Pruitts of Southamp ton." says Ingels. "Then his agent calls back, saying they accepted the offer." Frank Gifford Ryan Cassidy Ryan, however, almost became the family's only series holdout. He was about to leave for Burt Reynolds' acting school in Florida when a call came from his agent about the "Facts of Life" job. "I told Ryan to ask for at^ outrageous sum and go back packing his bags." THE GIFFER -- Even for a former football star like Frank Gilford, there is a limit to how much football he can stand. As a member of ABC's "Monday Night Football" sqiad since 1972, Gifford endures a football schedule that lasts from the hot summer of pre-season to the Pro Bowl at the end of January. He doesn't believe that foot ball is a year-round sport. "I'm not really interested in the USFL." says Gifford of the "other" football league, "other than to see how (Doug) Flutie did in his debut. My football sea son is long enough." Gifford would rather spend the off-season pur suing other sports assign ments or guest-hosting ABC's "Good Morning, America." This week, Gifford's efforts center on the Multiple Sclerosis Din ner of Champions in New York. The former New York Giant has worked for MS since 19.70. . . @1M5 Computes D.B. When young boys got into trouble then, it was because they were stealing jam from the pan try or cutting school to go swimming in the river. And no one was better at such shenanigans than Tom Sawyer and his buddy. Huckleberry Finn. The Disney Channel salutes them, and the 100th anniversary of the publishing of Mark Twain's classic novel "Huckleberry Finn," with a 26-part series called "Huckleberry Finn and His Friends." Best known as Tommy Bradford on "Eight is Enough." Aames is currently playing Buddy Lembeck, the sidekick and best friend of Charles (Scott Baio). on the comedy series "Charles in Charge" (Saturdays on CBS). Aames and Baio have been friends in real life for years and- co-starred In the 1982 film "Zapped," in which Aames played a role that is close to the Buddy Lembeck character. Their friendship is evident on-screen as weU as off. and the actor is happy to be working alongside Baio again. "I felt pretty good about taking another series. The time off can drive you crazy. I'm a firm believer in giving time to forget, and I was ready to get back. I felt good for many reasons. I was impressed with the pilot, and I knew I wit right for the role. Also, Scott and I have been friends for 10 years, but we didn't realize how much fun we would have. I know Scott was glad he got to work with me and just being there. I took pressure off of him. We're two com pletely different characters, and we enjoy the fact that we enjoy each other." His character is expected to garner laughs, but are there ary similarities between Lembeck and Aames? "There are a lot of similarities, that's part of the fun. A lot of things you see are thrown in. Any character you do will be a part of you. There is a lot of me in there. Vou have to be flexible and make the most of things that you can. "Buddy is actually an intelligent person who chores to laugh things off. He does things on purpose. He comes off as nerdy, but he's just like everyone else. "Right now, I don't see anything terrible in Buddy." the actor concludes. "You can show different sides of him. He is there for comic relief, yet he's smart enough to go in and realize a serious situation. Vou play these things to lighten up the scenes. I think there are lessons to be learned from the show. Yes, there definitely are messages there." ©1M5 Computog The BOX SEAT Ken Venturi: A Master golfer ir-'lr'J 4 . nil »«.J By Adam Bockerman For three days during April in 1956, Ken Venturi led the Masters Tourna ment as an amateur before shooting a final round of 80 to finish one stroke off the pace. In 1958, Venturi three-putt the 14th hole and lost the green jacket by two strokes. And in 1960, after entering the clubhouse with a one- stroke lead. Venturi listened to the roars as Arnold Palmer birdied the last two holes to win by one shot. Three Masters lost by a total of four strokes. "Ttming," says Venturi. "When you do what you do has as much as anything to do with it. I think about (Palmer's charge) when I see a player in a situation similar to mine. But it's not something I try to dwell on. The Open rectified a lot for me." It's the 1964 U.S. Open, at Washington's Congres sional Country Club, and Ken Venturi is returning from the golf dead. In over 100-degree heat, suffering from heat prostration and guzzling iced tea. he hangs on to win his first ever Major tournament, his first victory of any kind after four barren years. By the time an auto acci dent in '61 wrought havoc with his shoulder. Venturi had accumulated 10 tour wins in a four-year pro career. But efforts to com pensate for the pain short ened up and flattened out a swing once considered as classic as Beh Hogan's. The public brooks a winner's arrogance, but will not tolerate a journeyman's brooding. "I was so mentally dis satisfied with my play." says Venturi. "Only now do you realize players often heal faster physically then mentally." For this year's final round of the Masters, airing April 14 on CBS, Venturi shares co-anchoring chores with Pat Summerall. But for a twist, Venturi will report from the course once the leaders reach Amen Corner, the cozy nook encompassing the 11th green, 12th hole and 13th tee. Here was where Ben Crenshaw last year pulled away from Tom Kite and Larry Nelson to win his first Major. Leading by two, Cren shaw had just bogeyed the 11th hole when he heard that Nelson had hit his 12th tee shot into Rae's Creek and had come away with a double bogey. Granted the reprieve. Crenshaw then birdied the 12th by sinking a 12-footer. after which Kite followed Nelson's example by plopping his own 12th tee shot into the drink that moats the green, commencing his own triple bogey. It Augusta's magnolia's are on the tube, then spring has truly sprung. Amen. ® IMS Computog
