Pastoral care at Northern Illinois Medical Center A few years ago the word wholistic was slipped into the health care vocabulary, the idea of caring not just for the physical but for the emotional and spiritual needs of persons as well. Northern Illinois Medical Center first met that challenge when the Rev. Vincent P. Fish, an Episcopal priest, joined the staff eight years ago as chaplain. In August, 1984, Father Bela Krigler joined the staff to meet the needs of the Catholic population. The latest addition to the NIMC pastoral care staff is the Rev. Perry Beaumont, a United Methodist minister. These three men-Fish, Beaumont and Krigler-bring love few mankind to work with them, but they also bring background and education; each is important in his in dividual role. Beaumont is a United Methodist minister and a member of the College of Chaplains. He spent 19 years in parish service in Ohio, followed by a year at Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital preparing for hospital chaplaincy and came to NIMC in February, 1985, following a year's residency in pastoral care at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge. He is referred to patients on a special emphasis basis, and fi works as a liaison person bet ween hospital, patients and churches in the area. He is in supportive contact with ministers and clergy persons in the area. Fish, an Episcopal minister, first came to the hospital eight ears ago with a heart attack, e came as a patient just like the people he now serves. Being offered the job of hospital chaplain he says, gave him "something to hold on to" during a time when his lifestyle had to change. Now Re sees all of the new patients and holds the monthly memorial service. "We are here to reach out to help anyone," he said. "If we can just listen, and offer a few words of comfort and wisdom to our hospital family, then we are helping to improve the quality of life for those in need," he added. Father Krigler serves on a part-time basis to provide the sacraments and supportive ministry of the Catholic patients. Krigler, who came to this country in 1958 from Hungary, said that although his background is in education, he wanted very much to be part of a hospital ministry during this time in his life., "For my older years I am very proud to work with adults and the older generation," he said.
