The Family Service and Community Mental health Center of McHenry County has expanded its' Sexual Assualt Project to include services to a larger population of victims than survivors of rape. The Rape yictim Assistance Project began in October, 1983. "At that time we thought we would be working more with emergency situations at the hospitals and police stations," states Jackie Kaufmann, project developer. "What we have found instead is that vic tims who were assaulted months or even years before are the ones we are seeing." Kaufmann believes the trend is consistent with the fact that only one in 10 rapes are reported to medical or legal authorities. The Sexual Assault Project is now including both adults who were victims of incest or sexual assault as children, and children who have recently been sexually assaulted by a person outside the family.. "A conservative estimate is that there are currently 5,000 survivors of rape and sexual assault in McHenry County,"; says Ms. Kaufmann, who is conducting a research project on sexual assault victims in mental health settings. "A recently published study has found that 16 percent of all adult women have sexual contact with a family member before age 18," Kaufmann says. The Sexual Assault Survivors Project currently provides individual and family coun seling, women's support groups, 24-hour emergency services, and community education programs. A recent grant by the Mental Health Resource League of ^McHenry County has permitted the current program, expansion. The project has also joined the Youth Service Bureau and Turning Point in a sexual assault network. The purpose of the network is to allow staff who work with victinis of sexual and domestic violence to meet with one another, share ideas and resources, and develop needed programs in a non-competitive environment. Persons wishing to talk with staff from the Sexual Assault Survivors Project can call the McHenry County Crisis Line at 1-800-892-8900 (24hours a day) or Family Service at 385-6400 during regular office hours.
