Easter Seal program helps bypass patient to recovery When Ray Rippy first com pleted complicated bypass surgery after a stubborn bac teria affected his circulatory system, doctors gave him a 20 percent chance for recovery. "We were afraid he would have to have his leg amputated because of the lack of cir culation," Rippy's wife, Lila, said. Today, after several months of hospitalization and two months of treatment and physical therapy with Easter Seal's t Home Health Care progrartn, Rippy is able to resume his daily walk to the mailbox at the end of the driveway, a distance of one-half mile. Rippy, 77, experienced ex cessive bleeding and very high fevers during his hospitalization. He experienced a loss of memory. A salmonella infection affected Rippy's circulatory and digestive systems. Eventually, he required bypass surgery, the removal of his left kidney, and a section of aorta. Rippy's muscles became weak and he lost a great deal of weight during his illness. Since his discharge from the hospital, Rippy has been given a clean bill of health concerning the salmonella infection, but the process of rebuilding his muscles and neurological functions has been slow and painful. Rippy began a limited physical therapy program during his hospital stay and Easter Seals continued the program following his discharge. Easter Seal Physical Therapist Marge Swanson developed a program to con dition and re-tain Rippy's muscles in both his arms and legs. Exercises for strength, balance and coordination, and fine hand coordination became an integral part of Rippy's therapy program. Weights, a foam rubber ball, marbles, pegs, and writing utensils were all used by Swanson to accomplish her goal of improving Rippy's coor dination and strength. Donna Jones, a registered nurse with Easter Seals, carefully monitored Rippy's condition, administering medication to insure his blood was clotting correctly, making sure his remaining kidney was functioning properly, seeing to it that his nutritional needs were met, and checking on his response to the physical therapy program. Jones closely monitored Rippy's neurological and heart function. ' Recently, Rippy was discharged from Easter Seal's Home Health Care program. "We've seen much im provement since our initial visits," Jones said. The salmonella infection has cleared up. His heart and kidney are functioning correctly. Rippy's neurological status is greatly improved. His strength and coordination are improving steadily, as his daily walk and his writing ability attests. "His wife is managing his care well with a good un derstanding of what his needs are and how to meet them,"- Jones said. Page 9- PLAI.NDKALKR-HfcRALD. WEDNKSDA ̂.
