MOLLY MILLIGAN Your Home Decorator Turning Point, Inc. of Woodstock has announced a change in the name of their 24- hour phone line from Stressline to HELPLINE. The name change comes after reported confusion as to who may call the line for help. The 24-hour line provides more than just entry into the family violence services of Turning Point. It also serves as in formation, referral, and sup portive listening. Volunteers who work the HELPLINE handle a variety of calls: problems with farentin contact for^Qt-in often just a person who will listen. People call the line for many reasons and often, only to seek nothing more than just a person to listen, but when that person calls the line who needs resources, information, are in severe stress and-or need to be referred, Turning Point Line volunteers are trained to be effective in determining the nature of that person's need. Four years ago the Task Force on Domestic Violence and Parental Stress Line merged to become Turning Point, Inc., At that time the Parental Stressline was a 24-hour line whose ob jective was to provide support for parents who were ex periencing stress with their children. They hoped to provide support and alternatives in the incidence of child abuse. They joined forces with the Task Force on Domestic Violence in order to conserve their energies and to better promote the values of each system. Since that time the need for the line has grown. It is not only a doorway to the Turning Point Area residents report thefts • A television and video cassette recorder were two objects taken in a burglary at the home of Michael Dougherty, 590 W. Fox Lake Road, McHenry. County Police report that the thief pryed open a sliding glass door to gain entry to the house. In a separate incident, Thomas Tonyan, 1406 Palomino, McHenry, reported the theft of his car from where it was rked at 809 N. River Road, [cHenry. Agency, it provides a variety of help through information and referral. Turning Point tries to keep aware of all the new programs and support groups that have been and will be developed in the county so they can make the information available to those persons who call the HELPLINE. The HELPLINE functions 24- hours each day. When a person calls the 338-8080 number, the phone will be answered by a trained volunteer. Each person who works the HELPLINE is to cdtnplete training provided by Turning Point, Inc. Those in need of services may call the HELPLINE at 1-338-8080 anytime day or night. When you shop for upholstered furniture, comfort comes first. Sit, slouch, sprawl, curl up on it and if it isn't comfy, walk on by. Remove cushions and sit down again. Sit back and push down. With quality you won't feel bulges in padding. Give furniture a good shake. Does it wobble, creak? Gently tug buttons to see if securely fastened. Rockers, recliners, swivel chairs should operate without tipping, squeaking or pinching fabric. Quality frame construction is usually kiln-dried hardwood wh'ch is double- doweled, glued, screwed and reinforced with corner blocks, not just nailed or stapled. A simple test to check frame is to examine the front legs. Are they securely fastened to frame? Legs that are simply screwed to frame is a sign of schlocky' workmanship. When it comes to springs, the more the merrier. The best furniture will have 8 to 12 coil springs per seat. They will be close together, with an eight-way tie to keep the springs in place. The fewer coils and ties, the less comfort and support. Quality cushions have two or three layers of "padding. Coil springs are covered in fabric sleeves which are then wrapped in a layer of urethane foam. A second layer of foam is followed by polyester or cotton batting. Now that you've explored the submerged pan of the iceberg, examine its surface. Patterns should be carefully matched. Plaids, stripes, checks should all flow together. Floral patterns should be centered on cushions and back panel. Welting should be straight. Skirt should be lined and lay smoothly. Exposed wood should be smooth and evenly stained. 1 Upholstery is smooth 2 Arms are sturdy 3 Welting is straight, smooth 4 Frame joints are doweled, glued 5 Legs are part of frame, not screwed on 6 S-shaped springs are securely attached to frame with metal clips 7 Coil springs are tied eight ways 8 There are three layers of padding between springs and upholstery 9 Kiln-dried hardwood frame If you have a question for Your Home Decorator, send it along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Molly Milligan, P.O.
