APRIL 24.198S Sports mrnmmmmm--mmm Hinkle 'excited' about new opportunity By Joe Kiisek •....I, , • hbi^mmb mran nfwi ovxncv CARPENTERSVILLE Over the years at Crown High School, and then later at Dun- •••Crown, Jim Hinkle had his ihire of fine basketball players. Some went on to play at the collegiate level, some did not. Some of the ones who stopped probably could nave on the junior college Problem was, according to Hinkle, nobody asked. Now Hinkle wul be doing the ••king. And asking often. law week, Hinkle was named head coach of the Elgin Com munity College men's basket ball team. He is the third coach in three years at ECC, and takes the place of Ken Westray, who resigned in March. This past season, Hinkle led Dundee-Crown to a 19-7 record and the Fox Valley Conference championship. It was Hinkle's third FVC title since the in ception of the league seven years ago. "I'm excited," Hinkle said about the ECC job. "It's exciting for me and exciting for the school and community. It's thrilling to get a chance at another level/' The first order of business Hinkle has is to establish ECC as a "viable option" for com munity high school basketball players. In the past, ECC had a reputation of recruiting solely out-of-district players. "We want to make it a viable option, not a last option," em- Sports Log Swim passes sold The City of McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation will begin selling pool passes for the summer, beginning May 1. "You hear things from coaches talking about tneir players, 'if all else fails, he'll go to ECC.' "We don't want that to hap pen." Hinkle has already received commitments from two of his former players - all-conference guard Mike Harris and forward Jeff Saeger. "We nave*something for the college student," Hinkle said, "and we have it for less. Why should a player spend $9,000 to (day basketball when he can play and develop for $900? "I think it's important to •make c contact with the local coaches. And not just one phone call at the beginning of the season. When I call three years from now, I want a kid to see his tions as maybe A, B and then IC. Right now, that's not the way it is. "There is an attitude factor that has to change." Hinkle sees enough talent in the ECC district to build a winning program for the Spartans. But winning basketball games is not currently No. 1 on Hinkle's list. "My philosophy is the player must be a student first. They must learn responsibility and dedication first. Winning is a by product of those things. "It won't happen overnight. I may end up with just five players, but it will be five players that will be at practice everyday. "It's a challenge. I'm looking forward to giving it a try." Larson, Teuber help MCC nine win again Plalndealer-Herald photo by Chris Juzwlk New»S«rvlce Four double plays helped McHenry County College's baseball team sweep a double- header Saturday. The host Scots improved their winning streak to four with 4-3 and 7-1 wins over Oakton College. "I just wish we could have those two games back against Elgin. It'd be nice to play them again, but that's history," Coach Bill Ottley said. MCC improved to 5-4 in the Skyway Conference and 10-4 overall. Paul Zaglauer went the distance for the win, allowing three hits. He walked five and hit three batters. Oakton scored a run in the seventh, but Zaglauer hung on. Another seven-inning gem was turned in by Jeff Kruse in the nightcap. He walked four, fanned one and scattered six hits. Kruse scored on Todd Howell's fielder's choice. McHenry's Fritz Larsen scored on Todd Summerville's single, Howell scored on Kris Teuber's sacrifice, and Kurt Ljunggren singled in Summerville. In the first, Dowdy and Zelke had RBI singles. Teuber doubled home a sixth-inning run. The waiting is the hardest part, that's for sure. But a pair of McHenry relay teams fared well at the county meet. The 400 team of Lisa Lucarz, Trudy Milstein, Salena John and Ton! Reteck was fifth, as was the unit of Colleen Samen, Lucarz, Pam Bradley and Reteck. It must have been worth the wait. • BRUCE Save up to 20% on selected styles of America's favorite hardwood flooring Spring is in the air. and so are SAVINGS during our big Bruce Decorating Sale.
