Free tests to be offered at health fair Saturday Page 11 - PLAINDKALKR HERALD. FRIDAY . APRIL26. PJB3 Malpractice suits is topic of next Chamber luncheon "Prevention is Better than Cure." This philosophy has been preached by our mothers and our grandmothers, but as time goes on this practice becomes more realistic for us all. Modern technology has advanced the progress of medicine rapidly, and growing awareness of a healthy lifestyle is part of today's learning. Preventive steps are the key to maintaining good health. When NIMC participates in a health fair at Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 27, the public will be able to take advantage of free tests and information on a variety of health care topics. One of the test available will be the Hemoccult test. Although this is not a cancer test in itself, it detects occult blood in the stool and can lead to early detection of a potential problem. Information on mam mography will be of interest to women. Mammography, a breast screening process which can detect breast cancer in its very early stages, is now offered by NIMC and again is a diagnostic tool which owes the lives of many technological advances. Many health problems can be associated with abnormal blood pressure, and regular screening are advised. A registered nurse will be available to take blood pressure readings. In addition to the above, there will be something of interest to everyope at the health fair, which will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. The church is located at 4206 W. Elm St., McHenry. The next Chamber of Com merce All Member Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, May 8. The program for the day will deal with the topic of health care serve ices. The bi-monthly Chamber luncheons are designed to provide a social gathering for the Chamber membership, as well as information on a topic of universal interest. Dr. Joe Dickstein, chairman for the event, has set the lun cheon for 11:30 a.m. at Chapel Hill Country Club. He says, "It is the glut of frivoious malpractice lawsuits that has caused the malpractice situation to reach crisis proportions. According to the American Medical Association, lawsuits alleging malpractice have tripled in number nationwide over the last five years. In Illinois, the situation parallels the grim national picture. The Illinois State Medical. Inter-Insurance Ex change (ISMIE), the state's largest malpractice insurance company, reports that claims and suits which occurred and were filed within the same year rose 163 percent from 1976-77 to the 1984-85 policy vears. Of the suits filed with ISMIE since 1976, 80 percent have been closed with no payment to the plaintiff. Of the cases which went to trial, juries found for the physician 74 percent of the time. The numbers make it clear; the vast majority of malpractice cases are filed without merit." Dr. Allan Goslin, a general practitioner from Streator, Illinois, will be the guest speaker for the topic. He is a renowned spokesman of medical liability. * He will be ac companied by Dan Nash, a marketing representative of the Illinois State Medical Association. Costs related to the glut of frivolous malpractice lawsuits are paid by every patient and total almost $1 billion a year, according to American Medical Association estimates. That's $406 for every family in the state. These costs stem from two sources: the practice of "defensive medicine" and malpract ice insurance premiums. The hidden cost of defensive medicine results in the greatest expense to patients. Threat of a malpractice lawsuit forces physicians to adopt a "looking over the shoulder" mentality in treating patients. Defensive medicine is the practice of or dering more tests, procedures and longer hospital stays. These procedures do not provide better care; they merely build the physician's record in the event of a future lawsuit. In 1984, defensive medicine cost Illinois patients an estimated $825 million, according to the AMA. Adding even more to medical bills is the $250 million that physicians and hospitals paid for malpractice insurance in 1984, as estimated by the In surance Information Institute.
