Then Weird Al came up with Al TV. and now David Lee Roth, the grade-A ham of music, has brought us Dave TV -- all Dave, all night. In his new video, "Just a • Gigolo," Dave has added imitators of Willie Nelson, Boy George and Billy Idol to his now-familiar Van Halen video imagery, which includes scores of sexy women for David to lust after and those famous wide angle shots that make everyone else look like a nerd. But Roth has spent so much energy creating his video persona that his music has been lost between the dolly shots. It may work for him, but it's a dangerous road for music video to travel. Concepts Julian Lennon's new clip, "Say You're Wrong," is a classic conceptual video. Julian wanders between trains and tracks, with a red flag in one hand and a green flag in the other. The background is snow-filled, and the imagery is remini­ scent of "Reds" and "Dr. Zhivago." The viewer gets no more than an impression , of a story, but that seems to be the idea. " '* * © David Lea Roth In concert Wham! tries to reinvent the live concert video in "Everything She Wants." This time, the action was shot in artistic black and white. It's a bit preten­ tious, but it works, espe­ cially when the band is superimposed over the cheering crowd. The clip includes some nice flips by the boys (yes, they did their own acrobat­ ics), and several close-ups to get their fans' hearts throbbing. Tunes on TV Tonight, April 28, on MTV, Peter Zaremba of the Fleshtones hosts IRS Records' "Cutting Edge." This is the place to catch those up-and-coming bands before they've come and gone. Saturday, May 4, MTV will repeat the Jdhn Waite concert recorded last November at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia.
