"They really critique the "show a lot." admits Spound as he walks through the lobby of a New York hotel. "I'm always asked. 'Who was the big gest tipper on the show?' The answer is Robert Stack. He gave me $100 The cheapest was Dick Van Patten, a quarter. But usu ally it's a buck a bag." Spound and his charac ter have accumulated quite a few bucks -- on and off the screen -- working Wednesday nights at TV's swanky St. Regis Hotel. But despite the new-lound affluence. Spound retains a profound respect for the first buck that was given to him. It was during the fourth week of the show's first season. Executive Pro ducer Aaron Spelling hand ed Spound. who admits that he was a little apprehensive about his performance since "Hotel" was his first big television break, a dollar. Spound was confused. After all. he wasn't even carrying a bag. Then on the bill he found written, "Michael -- Give this back to me in thg^th year. Aaron." { The tip from thq() ,t jjfpved^ tq .be, l^e RBhfi- Michael Spound dence builder the Massa chusetts native needed. It's hard sometimes, Spound admits, to feel you belong on "Hotel" when the show is built around a never-end ing list of glamorous guest stars and your character's main duty is to carry the bags of the aforemen tioned. But Spound says he won't be carrying bags -- or feeling like excess bag gage^-- forever. "I did get to take my shirt off this season," he says with an equal mixture of pride and humility. "It's the first time I ever had to do that. Boy, it's tough to walk around holding your breath and trying to act, but it opened up a lot of opportunities to do talk shows." Don't get him wrong, though. Spound is not lob bying to get his name add ed to the ever-expanding list of television hunks. He's just happy for the expo sure., even if what's exposecf is his bare chest. Nickelodeon is host to a new cable-TV series. "National Geographic Explorer." that premiered earlier this month. The show airs every Sunday evening for three hours and is made up of several segments, ranging in iength from 10 minutes to one hour. If what we've seen so far is any indica tion, they have a real winner. The narration is insightful, and the photog raphy is beautiful. Tonight, April 28. the show opens with a colorful segment on the Cuttic- chios. an Italian pup- peteering family that han dles every angle of the business, from carving and painting the puppets to acting out the stories. There's also a long seg ment on Irving Johnson, who reflects on a life of adventure on the high seas: a segment On the frozen land of Siberia: and a segment on the craft of a 79-year-old Pennsylva nia woodworker. And finally, there's a segment called "In Pursuit of the Boar." which depicts the day-to-day lives of the boars of the French coun tryside. Only the National Geographic could tell the story of the wild boar with such grace and beauty. fk Phil Morris takes on a real acting challenge Mary Gross How. you ask. can an hourlong comedy special be funny every minute? With an ensemble cast that includes Ed Asoer. Jim Belushi, Shelley Berman. Danny Breen, John Candy, Joe Flaherty. Mary Gross. Tim Kazurin- sky, Robert Klein, Shelley Long. Harold Ramis, Mar tin Short. David Steinberg, Betty Thomas, George Wendt and Fred Willard, how could it fail? Those are some of the comedi ans who returned to Chi cago to tape "The Sec ond City 25th Anniversary Special." which airs April 29 on HBO. The Second City-veter ans perform sketches about everything from a little-publicized date between Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein lo an airline receptionist who inquires about a passen ger's political, religious and sexual proclivities before choosing a seat for him. (t) 1965 Compulog By Nancy M. Reichardt Since its inception in 1973, "The Young and the Restless" has shown an unusual willingness to tack le controversial or unusual story lines. "Y & R's" latest ground- breaker involves actor Phil Morris, who joined the show almost a year ago in the role of Tyrone Jackson, a young black law student. Morris' story line now centers around the unusual disguise Tyrone has adapt ed in order to elude the gangsters who are out to kill him. For the past five months. Tyrone has been passing as a midde-class white man . "The first time I heard that the producers of 'The $ Young and the Restless' were planning on having me play a white character. I honestly thought they were kidding me." says Morris. "But when the makeup art ists began experimenting with light-colored makeup and putting a brown wig on me. I realized they were serious." Morris admits that he was at first concerned about playing the role. He remembers that he decided lo "go for the role with eve rything I had." after his actor-father, Greg Morris, who starred in the series "Mission Impossible" and Phil Morris "Vega$," reminded him. how many white actors have played Shakespeare's "Othello." Getting .ready to play Robert Tyrone is no easy task Morris must undergo a one-hour makeup session, involving the appli cation of layer after layer of makeup, and don a wig To adopt the proper atti tude, Morris, who admils that "playing white" isn't as difficult as it might seem, depends on his own back ground "I went to Beverly Hills High School," says Morris "I'm not totally unfamiliar with the white culture To me Robert Tyrone is an upper-middle-class. well- educated. well-spoken, ambitious guy. / "In some ways he's like me. But he's smarter than I am." quips Morris with a quick, charming smile * <c)lMtGomeuio« i, £ . i bocks ol the cards HI oidei to break the bonk at eveiy Euro pean casino Worien Bcatty.
