Trees and shrubbery can be used as qature s own air conditioners in summer Spring Home Living Pag* 11 The Barn Nursery of Cary suggests that when it comes to keeping cool this summer, don't overlook the cooling potential of nature's green growing gifts. They're more than just beautiful. They're nature's air conditioners. The temperature difference between a properly shaded home and one that isn|t can be as much as eight degrees inside. Outside, the temperature beneath a shade tree is often 15 to 20 degrees lower than in the sun. That's why shade trees placed on the south or west sides of a house have earned the name "nature's air conditioners." Since the shade area under the tree's spreading branches is cooler than its surroundings, air is drawn in and moves upward through the branches, creating a current that moves through nearby doors and windows. This gentle movement of air is more pleasing than the direct cold blast of an air con ditioner. Plus it doesn't cost precious electricity and it's noiseless! Where you position shade trees has a great deal to do with how effective they can be in screening out sun. Plan before planting. A simple test you can do yourself is to place a six-foot tall stake where you are considering planting a tree. Watch the sun and shade patterns the stake creates over a summer day. It's esisier to move a stake than a planted tree. In general, deciduous trees are your best choice for shade. These are the kind that drop their leaves in winter to let the sunshine warm the house, thus saving heating energy as well. If you have an outside air- conditioning unit, see that it is well- shaded. Protecting the unit from the summer sun can prolong its life by making its workload easier resulting in a two or three percent improvement in the unit's energy demands. Planting also serves as an effective screen for this necessary intrusion on your land scape. ENERGY (Continued from page 10) before you regularly get home. These can be purchased at most any hard ware store. One mistake people often make, Seaton pointed out, is trying to use a window unit to cool more than one room by turning the air conditioner on full. Since heat moves from hot to cool areas, the result will be drawing hot air into the room with little cool air moving out of the room, thus over-taxing the unit. Sometimes, in the spring you may automatically remove your storm windows. Seaton suggests if your storm windows are built to open to the out side, leave them on. This will further help keep the warm air in.
