Fine arts scholarships to go to area students The Woodstock Fine Arts Fantastics will be held Thur­ sday, May 2, at 10 a.m. at the Woodstock Opera House. Proceeds from the annual talent show and salad luncheon go to the WFAA Scholarship Fund which benefits talented high school seniors who choose to continue their involvement in the fine arts. Among the scholarships and honorable mention winners to display their talents will be: Scott Shallenbarger, Wood­ stock; Andrea Leslie and Won Son Han, Marian Central and Jeffrey McKissack and Kathleen Pratt, Crystal Lake Central. It is the only com­ munity in McHenry County to Have such a commission. The city was also cited for support given to Woodstock Area Recyclers in developing a monthly recycling program. It is the first time that any municipality participated in and promoted the cause of recycling. The Defenders said the city had foresight in adopting curb- side collection of newspapers, which reduces the amount of solid wastes headed for landfill. The city also exhibited a com­ mitment to preserve natural areas in the commi demonstrated by the acquisition of a six and a. half acre to the city-owned Woods. Also recognized was the city's effort to preserve such historical buildings as the Opera House, Old Court House and the train station. City Manager Dennis An­ derson, Assistant City Manager David Danielson, and En­ vironmental Enhancement Commission members Winnie Cassiani, Larry Gibbs, Fran Mansfield, and Robert Thurow were present to share the honors. Usually given for individual environmental achievement, the Theta has upon occasion been awarded to group effort: the City ^)f McHenry in 1974, Pleasant Valley Farm In 1975, and " "tfre C^ry. Prairie Management Cornmib6eln4981 One of the oldest, largest, and most influential environmental organizations in the state, McHenry County Defenders also celebrated its fifteenth an­ niversary recently. Defender history was recalled with displays of photos, clippings, and newsletters, all marking the last 15 years of environmental service to the county. Adding to the celebration were awards given to some Defender members. Sydna Becker, one of the founders and continuously active since 1970, was proclaimed First and Foremost McHenry County Defender. Margaret and Lou Marchi, and Alice and Bill Howenstine, were presented with "Couples awards in appreciation of their united efforts in Serving the group. Having grown to a mem­ bership of over 400, Defenders now employ a paid staff which was introduced, as were original Defenders, and new members were welcomed. A McHenry area man was injured when his pickup truck went off Chapel Hill Road and rolled. ^Daniel E. Ballstaed, 1812 Riverside Drive, McHenry, was taken to Northern Illinois Medical Center (NIMC) by the Johnsburg Rescue Squad following the accident, ' Ballstaed told McHenry County Sheriffs Police he missed the curve and the vehicle went off the road and rolled to its roof. Stacy B. Robeson, 3326 Highland, Island Lake, was taken to NIMC by McHenry Township Fir^ Department after his car ran into the rear of a vehicle waiting to make a left turn. The driver of the other car was Eugene Hesse, of Route 2, Genoa City, Wis. Three passengers in the vehicle were not injured. Robeson told city police he was distracted by another vehicle when the collision oc­ curred. \ \ ' McHenry police are in­ vestigating a hit-and-run ac­ cident which resulted in more than $1,000 damage to a vehicle driven by Tammy L. Baumgartner, _ 2507 FairView, McHenry. Baumgartner said a white pickup truck ran a stop sign at the intersection of Pearl and Court Streets, crashed into her - car and drove away. (( in <s?
