I'nV - PI-AINDEALER-HERALD, WEDNESDAY . M\> 1. 1985 City residents once ran on 'Chad's Time' CH Duker re-hired as schools superintendent This is one of those weeks when I sit down to write a column without a brain cell working. A little of this and a little of that may come through to make a column. Daylight Saving Time is with us. It will take a little while to get accustomed to the change. For one thing, we rolled out of bed Sunday morning on old time. So I Hear by Earl Walsh There was a time Chicago was on "fast" time and McHenry was on what the natives called "God's time". That made train schedules and other plans a bit tricky. Farmers objected to the fast time, claiming they couldn't get into thefields. Making hay was not to their liking, to wet in early morning. Golfers and outdoor sport smen took a fancy to the long evenings. / No matter what the time, most of us look at our watches several times a day without knowing the time. Some day I think McHenry should be known as the city of many sirens. Of course, with our feathered tn< quackers leaving the river beach to spread around the area to build nests, the name of Duck- ville. "Oldie, but a Goodie": Woman was created c from the rib of man * NOT from his head to top him- neither from his feet to be walked upon. , She was made from his side •£. to be-his equal from beneath his arm to be protected by him; From very near his heart to be lovecMty him . Contributed A Now this is the way to start a new day. As Alvina and I sat at the breakfast table, bedecked in our robes, a good and loyal lriend came to our kitchen door. Unwrapping a package, Alvina found the prettiest combiiiation of cut flowers you could ever imagine. Those beautiful, fresh flowers came from the man's (or his wife's) garden. Fine weather marks the time when women get out of the house and visit with their neighbors over the hark ! fenre nr th#» over the back clothesline. * Spring should «o on forever. Flowers and lossoms are beautiful o but w \ soon fade away, v FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 2, 1935) Supt. C.H. • Duker has been hired for another year as superintendent of the McHenry Community High School and Grade School and all teachers were offered contracts for another year at recent meetings of the high school and grade school boards. , No general raise in salary will be tendered the high school teachers this year with the exception of some slight elevation in one or two cases where salaries were on a too low basis, v It puzzles me to know where hundreds of protesters get money to buy food. None of those marchers seem to have jobs or they would have to be home tending the store. Sometimes I worry about . having a good share of young readers. It was heartening the other day when that overworked little bird informed me that Mark Peterson, who reached ripe old age of 20 years on April 3CUis a loyal reader. : Happy birthday, Mark, may you have a good year with many »• blessings on your way to your twenty-first. JUST THINKING. Watching baseball games brings me to the conclusion that modern day • pitchers try to be too cute in hitting the corners of the plate. The count goes to 3 and 0, then they have to throw the ball right down the middle. * Two phone calls, one from another towh, asked me to report on my health in this space. I don't want to make this a jnedicalbulletin so will just say I get oik, but not out of the woods. <Q ----- Ed and Irene Wittrock rate a space in Bob Logan's book. --A couple of Northsiders who never heard of Comiskey Park. When I left our local hospital, Debra Toalson, R.N., was giving me instructions^ on what medicine to take at different hours. Think she saw a lost look on my face and asked, "Can you remember?" "No", said I. r So this nice nurse made out a chart for me to use. I'm still using it daily. She went beyond the call of duty. wice At a grade school board meeting this week Mrs. Alfred Richardson was hired as teacher of the fourth grade to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Booth bccause of illness. The McHenry Community igh school and the public grade school were closed Tuesday morning for the remainder of the week because of the many absences caused bv illness of the students. Cases of measles with a few of scarlet fever have in vaded the schools, playing havoc with attendance records. Boy Scouts in McHenry, as well as Scouts throughout the nation, are intensely interested in the National Boy Scout Jamboree to be held" in Washington, D.C. in August. One boy will be sent from McHenry to attend this national camp. McHenry Scouts eligible to compete are Harry Conway, Joe Gausden, Richard Freund, Jack Hess, Richard Justen, Bruce Klontz, Gerald Miller, Wilbert Schaefer, Harold Taxmari, Angelo Unti, Eugene Unti, William Klapperich, Herbert Reinhansperger and Gordon Knox. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 3, 1945) Even though the war in Europe is in its final stages, tragic news of castialities which occurred before the collapse of strong enemy resistance are being reported here. The latest of th&e is Rudolph Simek, 28, who was killed in France on March 24. A paratrooper, Pvt. Simek landed in Germany in March and was given orders to run across an open field. In doing so, he was nit by machine gun fire and died a short time later. - * "V-E Day--Make It a Holy Day--Not a 'Holiday' " was the slogan issued by the State Director 8f Selective Service to employees in suggesting commemorating the occasion. nnother veteran of World War H is establishing a business in McHenry. He is Samuel Sch- munk, who, on May 1,^ an nounced the opening of Sam's Radio Store on Main Street, West McHenry. Frank J. Gans, represen tatives of Sears, advertised "all materials, labor fully guaranteed on a new slate- surfaced, asphalt or shingle roof, 1,000 square feet, put on, $105. Buy on® easy terms, too." TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 28, 1960) The McHenry Publishing Co. has purchased the Harrison building at W. Elm street and in the near future it will become the new home of the McHenry Plaindealer. The building at the present time is occupied by the Harrison Appraisal Co. and the Siebel Motor Co. The move to the new location is not expected untir late spring of 1961. New appointees to the McHenry Township Fire Protection district, named at the last meeting by the trustees, are Edward Justen, Chief, and Theodore MiJler and Thomas Diedrich, assistants to the chief. Harold Hobbs who has served capably as chief since 1950 and was a member of the depart ment since 1940, decided to retire after 20 years of service. F o r t y - f i v e s i n g e r s , representing many countries, will appear in native costume as they take an 80-minute trip to four continents by jet when the McHenry Choral Club presents its annual spring program April 30 and May 1. The Family Outdoor Theatre featured Jerry Lewis in "Visit to a Small Planet;" and Paul Muni nd David Wayne in "The Last Angry Man." The locally owned and operated Certified store on Green and Elm Streets offered "Oona-Loa," a recipe direct from the islands, along with chickens for barbecue. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 30, 1975) Monday night's City Council meeting turned out to be somewhat of a bon voyage party for Earl R. Walsh and Thomas F. Bolger. Approximately nine ballots were cast before a board chairman was elected at the ; McHenry County College BoardT Of Trustee meeting last week. Barbara Pautz of Crystal Lake was elected chairman; Gerald Smith, Woodstock, ' vice- ehairman; and Robert Wedner of Harvard, secretary. The trustee from McHenry, Walter Turner, was absent causing: numerous tie votes. It was decided to I send a letter to Turner a^kmg that he attend MCC boarqm^etings regularly. Turner moved out of the area many months ago and since that; time has either misled meetings completely or been late.
