Program puts seniors back in work force By Angela Burden Plaindealer Herald Newa Service Seniors citizens in need of work in the area are being sought to join a program which employs persons over 55-years- olcL> Green Thumb, a federally subsidized program, is now available in the northern part of the state with the exception of Lake and Cook Counties. The program has come to McHenry County and surrounding counties to advance the cause of those 55 and older who are unemployed. Jerri Davis, area supervisor, has opened an office in Sycamore and was in Woodstock Friday to explain the program. / She said Green Thumb, which finds public service jobs for low- income older Americans, was asked to come to this part of the state because of the area's unemployment rate among the older citizens. The program was started last year in Lee and Ogle counties, where unemployed workers 55 and over were placed in clerical, custodial, dietary and other positions in schools, con servation areas, parks, nursing homes and senior citizen cen ters. "We find work for the people, then develop jobs they can do,," Davis said. "Our1 purpose is to provide employment for eligible persons and to help the com munity by providing sup plemental help to non-profit agencies." Wages are paid by Green Thumb and the job will last as long as funds are available, Davis said. She indicated that the program has been federally funded for the next three years. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Labor with money from Title V of the Older Americans Act. Davis explained that a minimum wage is paid and fringe benefits, including orkers compensation, sick ALL GOLF CLUB SETS 4 & BAGS 1 Cploct TENNIS RACKETS ON SALE! Davis said the National Farmers Union took over sponsorship of the program, which initially focused on helping rural communities. "It has since grown to include more urban areas," she said.
