The 20th edition of the event was a great success, as chilly weather did not deter 13 teams from competing. The Warriors finished fifth in the meet. * SLIMKO liked* the Air Force Academy better." In signing with the Falcons, Slimko will play in the Western Athletic Conference which in cludes Brigham Young, the University of Hawaii, San Diego State and the University of Texas-El Paso. The team will also play in Japan during the Christmas holidays in a tournament against the Army and Navy teams. "They said I'll probably play small forward or off-guard eventually," the 6-5 Slimko said. "He (Air Force coach Paige "Reggie" Minton) sees me playing a lot, maybe not right away, ^ut as the season goes on and I get used to their system. "It will take a while to adjust, but I know I'll fit in eventually. I think the coaches were pretty straight with me about playing." "They're an up-and-coming team," added Mark's father and newly-retired Jacobs coach Ken Slimko, about the Air Force team. "They've struggled no doubt, in the past few years. The WAC is a tough league and with the height limitations (the Air rorce Academy--has--certain- height restrictions for recruits which hinders Ip&ketball recruiting), that dicnrt help. And when he does get out, if he wants to get out, he'll have five years of experience behind him. "This is a heckuva challenge for him. It's going to be tough. But I know he's willing to go out after it. He won't back down." Like all new college athletes, Slimko must now prepare himself this summer for the task ahead. But unlike most college athletes, Slimko has to go through basic training like all -new Air Force recruits, "I've got to start running and weightlirting," he said. "I have to get in a little better shape so basics won't kill me. "Our coach wants to run them (other teams) in that mountain air, punish them. So I have to get used to the run-and-gun." While Slimko was being wooed by the different schools he didn't encounter any pay-offs or "special gifts" that nave been making news at other schools. "No shoe boxes," he laughed. "All of them were nice guys, there were no shenanigans. But I'm glad it's over. I was very tense the last couple of weeks. "I'm looking forward to it. Of course I'll be a little nervous but I think I can handle it." '85 softball season begins Plaindealer-Herald photos by Chris Juzwik The McHenry Area Men's 12" Softball League kicked off the 1965 season Monday night, and the first game between Fox Hole Tap and McHenry Oil-Jack's Snack Shop saw Vinnie Freund (above) being congratulated by teammates after his second home run of the game. Left, John Meyers of the Fox Hole safely slides into second as Ben Himpleman awaits the throw. Fox Hole won easily. JOHNSBURG (Continued from page 16)' Bill Brown copped a second in the discus, with a toss of 125'9". Brown actually had an exact tie with Lake Zurich's Wayne Huerth, but on the basis of next- best throw, HuePth was declared the winner, while Brown took second. Senior Mike Lawrence placed, twice for JHS, finishing fifth in the two-mile with a 10:21, and third in the mile, 4:41.6. "Mike was seeded 10th in the mile, and really came back well. He wasn't real happy with his two-mile time, but he did well in the mile," said Oberembt. The 1,600 relay team of Dust, Tim Shipe, John Shiman and Brett Bartkoske took a sixth place, 3:42. The frosh-soph sprint medley relay was won by Johnsburg's foursome of Jeff Huemann, Eric Mellum, Pete Pagast and Shiman, which broke a school record with a 47.5 clocking. It was the second time the group had set a new JHS mark this season. The same four finished second in the 4X100 relay, and the distance medley team of Charlie Giovanni, Jerry Russell, Shiman and Paul Dullberg grabbed a third. Shine took a sixth in the triple jump to give Johnsburg two scorers in that event, along with Dust. Johnsburg was scheduled to face Marian Central and Grant in Fox Lake Tuesday. Thursdav. Hampshire is slated to trek to Johnsburg for a non-conference dual meet.
