The McHenry High baseball coach watched two baseball games that day, both of which found his Warriors on the losing end of games with Fox Valley Conference-leading Crystal Lake Central. What's , worse is that Wilson mound corps struggled through the double loss, as the Tigers took ad vantage of walks, wild pitches and hit batsmen to win 5-4 and 16-5. McHenry is now 3-6 in the FVC, 7-7 overall. The Warriors were scheduled to host Dundee- Crown Tuesday before travelini to Carpentersville for a rematcl Thursday. "Central scored their first three runs on wild pitches," lamented Wilson of the first contest. "We just made a lot of, mistakes. They only got five hits, but we gave up 10 walks, hit two batters and threw three wild pitches." 4 The locals could muster onl; four hits of their oftn. but sti iy 11 managed to tie the fracas at 4-4 in the sixth. But Central loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, and Steve Van Wit- zenburg's bunt single scored the winningrun. JeffSchuster suffered the loss in relief. Also seeing action for McHenry on the mound in game one were starter Steve Hutt, Steve Katzenberger and Craig Hill. "Hill pitched pretty well in the first game,7' said Wilson. "He pitched four-and-a-third and did okay. Schuster did fairly well, too. He hit the first batter in the seventh, then the next one got a hit, we intentionally walked the third, and then the bunt single won it." It didn't get any better for McHenry. In game two, senior Pat Dunne got the starting nod, but only lasted ope-and-a-third, allowing six walks, and was taped with the loss. Schuster followed Dunne on the hill, and fared pretty well. Katzenberger came on in the third and walked the only two batters he faced, and then Steve FVC Baseball Cunningham finished up. "They just started bunting/, away on Cunningham," sa Wilson. "They scored eight the fifth, and they squeezed six of those eight." / Each team had eight hits. Hill's two led the Wapior at- tack. A . * S "It's ̂ credible," said Wilson. "In two games we gave -up 25 walks and threw five wild pit ches. We have to throw strikes. It might be that they're trying to throw too hard, but it's probably that they haven't got enouj discipline to practice on the si< "With the amount of games we're playing, five, a week, we don't have too many practices. We're scoring ^some runs, not a lot, but some. It's not enough though when you don't throw strikes," said Wilson. "By losing twice to Central, we lost all chance of winning the conference," related Wilson. "But we've got a chance now for third place. We'd like to start winning a couple." Fred Boal of Hebron won the 30 late model stock car feature, becoming the third different winner in as many nights of the 1985 season. Dan Johnson ,of Woodstock, making his first start of the season, was the only other leader in the fast race. Bob Brownell of Cary made the most moves in the race as he tried to race on the outside and gain spots, but each time he only was forced to drop back again. He finished fifth after being up as far as third. Crystal Lake's Eddie May finished third with fast time qualifier Steve McCarthy of Burlington, Wis., taking fourth. Next week the Lake Geneva Raceway will begin Quality Tire Championship racing with extra pay to overall point winners in the two-week series. The purse will be $6,000, with the race continuing on June 4. WILMOT, Wis. - Four McHenry drivers fared well in the late model sportsman race category Saturday in the opening night of racing at the Wilmot Speedway. The top area finisher was Skip Martin, who was third in the 20- lap feature. McHenry's Jay Maywald was right behind in Auto Racing One-inning blues haunt Marian/> fourth place. In the first heat, McHenry driver Ed Ozog was the first across the finish line, .while Dennis Carlton of McHenry was second in the second heat. Carlton, making his sport sman racing debut, looked strong in the early going of the 20-lap late model sportsman main as he took the lead from Keith Malek on lap two and stay edin front until lap 10, when his car bogged down and stopped in the middle of turn four, putting fast' qualifier A1 Atkinson of Pleasant Prairie?^ Wis., in front. Wayne Dukas of Zion recovered from an injury to take second. Martin, Maywald and Carl Gardner, Jr., of Lin denhurst completed the top five. WOODSTOCK -The ' 'one- inning syndrome" seems to follow the Marian Central softball team wherever it goes. Even at home. The Hurricanes were struck Friday afternoon by a bad first inning--a frame in which Lake Zurich scored nine runs--as the Bears thumped Marian, 15-2, in a five-inning Northwest Suburban Conference game. "The first inning was a complete disaster. We didn't make any fielding errors. They just combined a few walks with a few passed balls with a few hits ana we were down 9-0," said Marian Central coach Lisa Billman. "And when they hit, they hit us to death. They hit the ball very hard." Lake Zurich hammered out 18 hits to Marian's four. Hurricane tallies came in the fifth inning when Sandy Newman and Ann Franklin singled. On Franklin's hit, Lake Zurich overthrew two bases allowing Newman to scor^ Franklin, who got to third on the throwing errors, scored later on a passed ball. Colleen Calcagno and Dona Remke had the other two hits for the Hurricanes. Billman said she hopes her team will jell even further upon entering the second round of conference play. "Our younger players are becoming more accustomed to playing with the seniors. That's a big factor in becoming a\team," she said.
