If \ Weeds are a problem at some time or another in just about all lawns. Lawn weeds may be classified as annual grasses, perennial grasses, / or broadleaves. . While a thick, healthy lawn is the best defense against weed problems. • The J • i 'i (EXTENSION) People M/um Crabgrass and other annual grasses are best controlled through the use of preemergent - herbicides, which kill weed seedlings as they germinate. Timing is critical in applying these materials, because once the weeds are up and Estate zoning wanted for 401 acres A petition Has been filed for hearing before the McHenry County Zoning Board of Appeals by • petitioners^ American National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, Trust No. 26266, Harris Trust and Savings Bank, Trust No. 43060, and Gerald W. Fogelson for an amendment to the McHenry County Zoning Ordinance from "A--1" Agricultural District to "E--5" Estate District. The property is located in Nunda Township approximately on the north side of Crystal Springs Road, situated between the junctions of Oak Ridge Road, and Crystal Springs Road, and the junction of McHenry Crystal Lake Road and Crystal Springs Road, and consists of approximately 401.61 acres. The hearing on the petition will be held on May 1 and 2,1985, at 2 p.m. in Room 203 of the McHenry County Cburthouse, 2200 N. Seminary Ave/, Wood stock. All those who are interested may appear and be heard.' , , established, preemergent herbicides will not control them. For this reason, May 1 is a good target day to have preemergent crabgrass herbicides applied by.£ There * are - several preemergent crabgrass her bicides available for use on home lawns. DCPA, or Dacthal is one of the more popular choices. Siduron, or Tupersan, may be used at half the recommended rate when used on newly seeded lawn, which makes it another popular choice because no other material can be used on new lawns. Other suggested preemerge crabgrass herbicides include\ benefin (Balan) and bensulide (Betasan). Unlike annual grasses, there is no selective control for perennial grass weeds in home lawns. In other words, any herbicide applied will not only kill the weeds but also the grass. Thus for controlling perennial grasses, plan on overseeding those areas after the weeds die. The best herbicide for this purpose is glyphosate (Roun dup, Kleenup) because it will control all types of grasses but will not leave any residue in the soil to harm future seedlings. So spot treat patches of quackgrass, tall fescue, and similiar perennial grasses with this material. » v Broadleaf weeds are probably the easiest class of weeds to control in home lawns because there are several selective herbicides available and timing isn't ceal critical. Broadleaf weed herbicide choices include 2,4--D, MCPP (mecoprop), and dicamba. Commercial mixes of two or all three are available to give a wider spectrum of con trol, as not all broadleaves can be controled by one particular hertricide. For example, dif ficult weeds like ground ivy will ; only be controlled by 2, 4-D. If ,| you have questions on how to control a specific Weed, contact the Extension office. Be careful in applying her bicides, especially broadleaf herbicides, in the home land scape because they can damage other plantings. Spray only under calm conditions and follow alft label directions. Spring and fall are the best times for spraying broadleaf weeds. Once weeds are killed througB the use of herbicides, main taining a vigorous, thick lawn will, keep them from coming back. You can achieve healthy turf by proper seeding, watering, mowing, and fer tilizing: Contact the McHenry County Extension Office for more information: 789 McHenry Ave., P.O.
