Durbin's -studies included seamanship, close order drill, Naval history and first aid. KIRK HANSON Army Pvt. Kirk A. Hanson, son of Ronald A. and Ann M. Hanson of McHenry, has completed one station unit training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning,Ga. OSUT is a 12-week period which combines basic combat training and advanced individual training. Soldiers were taught to perform any of the duties in a rifle or mortar squad. BENTLEY TREAT Marine Pfc. Bentley W. Treat, son of Patsy L. Treat of McHenry, recently reported for duty with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Ca. JAMES KEATING Air Force Airman 1st Class James M. Keating, son of James M. and Sharon P. Keating of McHenry, has participated in Team Spirit '85. This is the largest joint combined field training exercise in the free world this year, on the moun­ tainous peninsula of South Korea. Team Spirit '85 was the 10th annual exercise of its kind and involved the deployment, reception and employment of U.S. and Republic of Korea forces responding to possible contingencies in the Korean theater. Keating is a jet engine mechanic with the 3rd Tatical Fighter Wing at Clark Air Base, Philippines. * <& STEVEN OLMSTED t Navy Fireman Apprentice Steven J. Olmsted, son of Dawn Olmsted of Island Lake, was graduated from Basic Hull Maintenance Technician School. During the eight week course at U.S. Naval Damage Central Training Center, U.S. Naval Base, Philadelphia, Olmsted received instruction on the basics of welding, pipefitting and metalsmithing. He also studied the procedures used to fabricate, install and repair all types of shipboard structures, plumbing and piping systems. MARY REDMOND Marine Cpl. Mary L. Red­ mond, daughter of Willis W. and Joann Lee of Wonder Lake, was recently awarded a Navy Achievement Me^al. She received the decoration for the superior performance of her duties while serving as an Ad­ ministrative Clerk with the Law Enforcement Branch of the Human Resources Division, Manpower Department, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington D.C. from January to August 1984. BRIAN THIETUE Marine Pvt. Brian H. Thietue, a 1984 graduate of McHenry East Campus, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. During the 11-week training cycle, Thietue was taught the basics of battlefield survival. He participated in an active physical conditioning program and gained proficiency in a variety of military skills, in­ cluding first aid, rifle mark- manship and close order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline were emphasized throughout the training cycle. STEPHEN WEBER Navy Seaman Recruit Stephen J. Family Service and Com­ munity Mental Health Center For McHenry County has joined with the 620 members of the National Council of Community Mental Health Centers and mental health agencies nationwide in observing May as Mental Health Month. The theme "Mental Health: More Than a Trivia Pursuit" is used to emphasize the im­ portance of mental wellness and to encourage the community to learn more about the services in McHenry County. In commenting on the ob­ servance, Robert Martens, agency director, said, "Mental Health Month provides us the opportunity to focus public attention on the mental health needs of our community. The theme reminds us as individuals that as we learn more about mental health, we are better able to choose lifestyles that promote mental wellness," Martens explained. "Further, it will help us remember that we as communities must take an active role to assure that we and our neighbors have access to quality mental health services." "Through their community mental health center, residents of McHenry County have access/ locally to services designee! to „ promote mental 'wellness' and treat a variety of mental health related problems," Martens continued. "Family Service and Community Mental Health Center is part~ef-a^ nationwide system of agencies delivering care at the local level. Established 22 years ago, the system provided seirjces last year to an estimated fiveVnillion Americans." f "There are, however, still far too many people who are not receiving the care they need," said Martens. "The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that one in five Americans are affected by mental health related problems and that only about one-fifth oT those had sought mental health services. Community mental health centers offer prevention and education programs which contribute to public un­ derstanding and encourage people to take advantage of the services they need," he said.
